TheChirurgeon’s Road Through 2025, Part 18: Wardome Prep

Welcome back, Dear Reader, to my ongoing blog of competitive and hobby progress for 2025. Anyways, last time around I ran another test game with the Coterie of the Conceited for my Emperor’s Children, painted some Goremongers, and showed off my new Lucius model. This week, I’m scrapping all of that for the Wardome GT!

Wardome was a new GT that popped up last year and was close enough to my house that I was upset I couldn’t go. I couldn’t go because at the time I was in the UK attending the Oxford GT. I have no regrets – that was a fun event and I always love spending time with Corrode and Wings, who are two of my favorite people on this earth. But it did mean that this year I had a good chance to just go have a chill local GT and that’s what I’m looking for right now. I’ve even got Goatboy coming back in to hang out for the weekend.

But a new event means a new list, right? Well, only kind of. Emperor’s Children aren’t legal for this event, and even if they were, I don’t have the army fully painted to take advantage anyways. And the Death Guard and World Eaters updates appear to be a few weeks away, at the earliest. So that means I’m back on Creations of Bile.

Adjusting My Creations of Bile List

Here’s the thing: My Creations of Bile list isn’t great. I know I’m running sub-optimal strats. I should have 30 Possessed in here. Instead I have zero. I’m running Plague Marines and Obliterators and while they’re cute and capable, they don’t create the same melee pressure that you get out of those more dedicated lists. I have some units that are capable of hitting with force, but five Plague Marines can whiff pretty often, especially if they don’t have +1A/+1 WS, and I often find they don’t have the durability I need if they get stuck in against more deadly units. I like their shooting but it’s not enough.

So what’s my play here?

Well, I’m a little ham-strung by the model situation right now. I have maybe five painted Possessed and I can tell you that with those guys you either run a unit of ten or you run none at all. Where I *can* improve however is with my Chosen – I noticed a lot of top Bile lists run a full unit of ten Chosen. That makes a lot of sense – they’re a big, tough unit with 3 wounds and they’re great when supported by Bile to get +1 Strength/Toughness. They have a high volume of attacks and good speed, and they help me get a kind of “hammer” unit my army is often missing. Unlike Plague Marines they still get Pacts, and with an Icon I can mitigate my horrible luck with Leadership tests.

The easy trade-off here is one unit of Plague Marines, who at 90 points are a bit cheaper, but I can make the extra room by dropping out the Helm of All-Seeing on the Master of Executions. That hasn’t really come up for me in a game yet, even when I’ve gone into Bridgehead Strike, and so I don’t expect it will help me here. The extra Chosen cost me 125 points, I had 10 to spare already after the drop to Nurglings, and that plus 90 for the Plague Marines keeps me at an even 2000. Here’s the list:

How It Will Play

The big problem with this list is that I haven’t played with it yet. It’s not a massive change, but losing an entire unit does change the dynamic when it comes to scoring and actions. I think in this version the Chosen play more aggressively while the Plague Marines and Rhinos take a more passive, “sit back and action and scrap if you need to” role. My plan is to get a test game in on Friday night against Goatboy, just so I have a single rep under my belt with the list. I’m pretty comfortable with how everything else in there plays so I don’t think it’ll be a huge adjustment, but I’m definitely worried about losing track of a unit and end up short-handed on something like Cleanse or Containment.

On that note, I’m going to go harder on scoring this time. After doing the analysis on Secondary scores and cycling for Hammer of Math a few weeks ago – article here – I’ve come to the conclusion that while I’m not liable to score a bunch of 100-point games playing with guys in power armor, I can at least do a better job cycling bad secondaries and improving my scoring odds. I tend to save CP for other things and while that’s not terrible, I can do a much better job of using my Chaos Lord to knock out key stratagems and spend my turn CP getting more VP. I think being a little more aggressive there will pay off in the long run, so I’m eager to try it.

Otherwise, the Rhino math doesn’t change. Swapping 5 Plague Marines for 5 Chosen means Bile and his lads still fill the same Rhino, while Plague Marines join the Legionaires and Nemesis Claw. They can be more like melee threats by themselves, but in a surgical fashion, with shooting support from the Vindicator, Predator, and Obliterators. Is it enough melee? No, probably not. But I’m a good all-rounder with this list.

I also considered swapping out the Warp Talons or doing some additional changes here – Bikers are showing up more as a fast cheap action unit with teeth and I have three Night Lords bikes but ultimately I wasn’t sold on pulling the Talons. The Talons have that Rapid Ingress and “uppy” appeal and if Bikes could disappear while they were near the table edge I’d have considered them in a heartbeat. As-is, they don’t get the benefits of the Detachment as a MOUNTED unit and that’s enough for me to sideline them at the moment.

Hobby Progress

It was a slow hobby week. Well, slow in that I don’t have anything to show here because I didn’t have time to paint things on top of the stuff I can’t show you. Check back Saturday for that stuff. I do have a couple of days this week to do some extra painting, and so my goal is to figure out how I can get a few more Chosen done that fit my army theme, since I only really have five of those. That said, I have plenty of stand-ins that will work just fine for them.

Next Time: Wardome Results

That’s it for this week. Come back next Thursday when I’ll have a two-part article on the results of Wardome – how I did, and whether I snagged a golden ticket (spoiler: I won’t). Then it’ll be on to planning for the Dallas Open and teams events in late May and early June.
