The Best Year in Gaming: Round 2 in the Southwest Conference, Part 2

Welcome back to our Best Year in Gaming March Madness bracket competition! Yesterday we finished off the Northwest Conference, and today we’re moving on to Round 2 in the Southwest Conference. It was an interesting round with a pair of upsets – 2011 absolutely trounced 1988, partly because a bunch of our Patrons are philistines who don’t appreciate the greatness ofĀ Super Mario Bros. 3, and 2015 fell to 1989 in a much narrower vote.

Results: 2011 and 1989 win

As we finish off the Southwest Conference for round 2, we’re looking at two new entrants in our pair of matchups, and with those we’ve finally published every single article for the series – you can now read the whole thing start to finish, if you feel like it – click this link.

1995 is a monster year for the Super Nintendo and the dawn of the fourth console generation. The CCG craze is in full swing, giving us a glut of card games to play, some great, most terrible. We get the best RPG of all time inĀ Chrono Trigger, and a number of amazing games mark the start of the polygon era for video games. The question is whether that can top 2017, which comes screaming into our competition with a ridiculously stackedmm year on the tabletop – Necromunda, Warhammer 40k 8th edition, Azul,Ā andĀ GloomhavenĀ make for an incredible set of releases, and on the video game side you haveĀ Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 7, Cuphead, Fortnite, Player Unknown Battlegrounds, Super Mario Odyssey,Ā and Hollow Knight.Ā

2016 beat 2014 to get here, and that was a tough one. As far as years in our competition go, havingĀ Overwatch, Titanfall 2,Ā andĀ Stardew ValleyĀ helps quite a bit,Ā andĀ KingdominoĀ andĀ Sharp PracticeĀ are good tabletop games to have. I was worried when we started this that 2023 might not hold up to past years when we really started looking at it but man I was happy to be wrong – 2023 was truly an insanely good year for games, withĀ 10th edition Warhammer 40k, Sea of Stars, Alan Wake 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom, Diablo 4, Hi-Fi Rush, Spider-Man 2,Ā and stellar remakes ofĀ System ShockĀ andĀ Resident Evil 4Ā on its list.

If youā€™re interested in voting on the outcome, head over to our PatreonĀ and join our Discord server to vote. Otherwise, check back tomorrow for the winner and the next matchup in the Southeast Conference.
