Rockfish’s 2024 Year in Review

Well that was a rollercoaster of a year, with some wild ups and downs both in my hobby and personal life, but it ended pretty well if incredibly busy! I’m a bit late getting around to doing this, but the last couple of weeks of my life has been completely packed and better late then never!

I couldn’t really tell you exactly how many models I got done this year as I kinda fell off the wagon of tracking at the start of the year; I was having a rough time then and that was the least of my concerns, but as you’ll see it’s a ton! I’m not really going to go through this in any particular chronological order, mostly just what comes to mind.

I’ll kick off with a fun little project I had occupy me for a few weeks earlier in the year; I’ve thought about doing Iron Warriors for years and decided to do a few. I kinda left this start of an army in an awkward state as I got distracted part way through but I am hoping I’ll pick it up again later this year between army releases I am interested in.

Another abortive project was that I picked up painting and a bit of playing of Dropfleet again for a few weeks; I enjoyed it but got way too busy and didn’t really get any traction locally which meant it dropped off my radar again.

I hadn’t really been expecting to do any Kroot but preview copies turned up at my door and it ended up being a neat little few weeks of work that are pretty cool to have.

Another casualty of how busy I was this year is the Blood Angels I worked on for a couple of weeks; between work and other previews I just didn’t quite have time to get to a full army. It is a fast scheme so I might try to bash a few more units out sooner or later though!

Special memorial to these DC I did for a Secret Santa that got stolen; they’ll live on in our hearts…

Orks are a funny army to me in that I like doing stuff for them, but it’s massively time-consuming, so I usually like doing a handful of units every year or two and these goobers were this round of that pattern.

Onto a bit bigger of a project! For the last few months I’ve randomly been picking at filling out my guard some more, it’s a wonderful break between more difficult models and units since I can knock out a vehicle in a night or two and I am starting to have a decent collection of this army when combined with previous years work!

I’ve honestly been having a ton of fun with the idea of having little ‘nose art’ pieces on my vehicles; nothing too complex or fancy but 15-20 minutes to freehand a little design adds a ton of character and I’d highly recommend it!

One of my more prolific painting exploits this year has been my new scheme for Battletech; about July my box for the latest KS turned up and that meant I once again had an absolute deluge of models that I was never going to get through with my previous schemes. To have a hope of eventually ending my backlog I decided to try out playing with a new scheme, and honestly, it’s been a huge success. It’s fast and pretty, which has meant I can get this many models done in the random gaps and breaks I take from working on other stuff! Turns out being able to do ~7 models in a night or two is a good way to stack them up.

I did end up doing some AoS models as a preview for the new edition in the mid-year, it was a neat if rushed affair trying to get a spearhead done in less then a week and I ended up sending in the last pictures the night before I went on a vacation!

Getting into the odds and ends a bit, these were some LI models I did right at the start of the year before I completely fell off the train on painting models for this game. I never even ended up playing it after everything, sadly it just didn’t seem worth it to me to get enough painted up to actually bother.

More random side things are stuff like these marines I had primed ages ago but never got to, a Tfex I wanted for a game early in the year and the gobbo of the year for fun!

Last but definitely not least is a CK lancer I did a few months back after having it lurk in the box since release, I won’t lie that I was hesitant because I assumed it would take forever to paint but it ended up being a fast little two night project that was a bunch of fun!

Whew, okay, that was a wild assortment of stuff this year and a lot of things; I technically have like another 23 models or so that aren’t pictured here but I just didn’t have time to get pictures done or they don’t entirely fall under 2024 but I’m sure you’ll see them soon if you keep an eye on our hobby round ups! I hope 2025 goes well for everyone, and I really hope it’s better then last year for me, and I’ll see y’all again for another year in review another time!
