Howdy scummers! We are psyched (and grateful) that Games Workshop sent us a preview of the new Squat brute – the Vartijan Exo-Driller. Fowler painted it up and will be showing it off for a special Saturday edition of Necromunday.
Some notes on assembly and painting
First off, I highly recommend magnetizing the options. On the weapon end, you can just drill directly into the slot for the peg. On the elbow site, I snipped the peg off and drilled in just a bit. 2x1mm magnets do the trick here!
Overall, this was a tricky build. I found that many of the peg and slot assemblies didn’t have particularly tight fits, which made lining up the tubes harder. It you have a set of helping hands (or a Citadel assembly handle) it’s definitely worth using for lining up the arms and tubes. This chonk is on a 50mm base, so I made my own Zone Mortalis base-topper for it (you can read about my process for that here). The head is not compatible with the rest of the squats – it is way too small for swaps without some serious conversion work.
My paint scheme is a slight variation of my standard (simplified box art) scheme. The main armor color is Army Painter Exile Green / GW Sons of Horus, the same one I used on gun casings on the regular squats. Off white bits are just the white primer color with Streaking Grime after. Helmets and hazard stripes are Badger Craven Yellow. Helmet visor is Caledor Sky with a highlight of Temple Guard Blue. Steel stuff is Vallejo Metal Color Gunmetal, a wash of nuln oil, and a drybrush of Runefang Steel. Bronze stuff is Army Painter True Copper, a wash of Reikland Fleshshade, and a bit of true copper again. Everything got a generous spray of Ammo By Mig Streaking Grime and a vigorous cleanup.
And that’s all we’ve got for this one! Many thanks to GW for sending us a preview of the Exo-Driller. I’m definitely looking forward to painting up the other half of the Squats box to give our new guy some more friends. As always, if you have questions or want to send us a picture of your awesome cat, email Necromunday@Goonhammer.com.
