LVO Day 1: Results and Developments

Welcome back, Dear Reader. If you’ve been following along with our LVO prep this week you know that there are a number of interesting storylines to follow and with one day down, there have been some exciting developments in the space. In case you missed our earlier articles, you can find them here:

With that out of the way, let’s track our Goonhammer team and our friends and see how they’re doing.

James “Boon” Kelling

Boon had a great day 1, and as a result is currently sitting at 3-0, having beaten Black Templars, Crusher Stampede Tyranids, and Grey Knights to finish day 1 undefeated. Of particular interest is his final day 1 match, in which Boon matched up against Andrew “Captain America” Gonyo’s Grey Knights list, which has a staggering six Dreadknights:

Gonyo’s a hell of a player, and this game came down to the wire. Gonyo trapped Boon early by having him walk a unit of Grotesques right into a trap but ultimately -1 Damage is a big boost against Grey Knights and the combination of center objectives on the mission (Vital Intelligence) and the Domination Primary (hold 2/3/more) meant that the Grey Knights couldn’t just sit back and chip away, meaning they’d have to be vulnerable.

As it stands, Boon is currently one of 92 undefeated players, which means that tomorrow will likely see a cut down to 10-12 undefeated players vying for 8 spots on Monday (with a shadow round to determine the last few spots in the top 8). Depending on how he does, that may include Boon – his win against Gonyo was well-earned, but low scoring, and so that puts him behind on tiebreakers.

Boon’s next matchup? Another game against Crusher Stampede tomorrow morning. Good luck, Boon! We’re rooting for you.

Josef “JoeK” Krier

On the Age of Sigmar side of things, JoeK is also up 3-0, having bested Daughters of Khaine, Ironjawz, and Maggotkin on day 1 for his 3-0 finish. JoeK’s currently in fourth place with 21 undefeated players going into Day 2. His next matchup is likely to be against Daytond Obre’s Daughters of Khaine.

Good luck, JoeK!

Other Notes

  • “Contemptor” Kevin Stillman is 1-1 right now, having lost his second game on a type of “Psychic Awakening” mission he was not prepared for.
  • Don Hooson is 2-1 right now, having lost his first game to Chaos Space Marines.
  • Mike Pestilens is likewise 2-1, with his Emperor’s Children having dropped a game in round 2 to the new Genestealer Cults.
  • Goonhammer Patron Jeffrey Kolodner is 1-2 after winning his first game against Death Guard.

The Major Storylines

With that out of the way, let’s talk about the major developments of the day

  • John Lennon drops game 1. In a tragic upset, Lennon lost game 1, falling to a Crusher Stampede list. This is a massive blow, and will almost certainly cost him any shot at winning the ITC this year.
  • Siegler is 3-0. After making a surprise showing at the event, Siegler has jumped out to a 3-0 start with his Veteran Skitarii list. He’s a little behind on points, but doing well enough. His next game is against Devin Cross’ Speed Freeks list.
  • Mani Cheema is also 3-0. Mani’s been on a tear, starting 3-0 without dropping more than 7 points in any of his games. And his path was harder than expected, capping off day 1 with a win over Brad Chester from the Art of War. Next up for Mani? Freebooterz.
  • Malik Amin Rubio is 3-0. Another top contender in the top 5 of the ITC standings, Malik’s Crusher Stampede have so far trampled Necrons twice, then Dark Angels. In Round 4 he faces off against the Adeptus Mechanicum.
  • Custodes seem good. There are a lot of 3-0 Custodes players. Overall the field looks pretty healthy, all things considered. It’ll be worth seeing how things shake out tomorrow.

Speaking of which, that’s it for today. We’ll be back with another update tomorrow. In the meantime, if you have any questions or feedback, drop us a note in the comments below or email us at contact@goonhammer.com.
