How To Paint Everything: Today, The Rebellion Dies Squad Pack

In this article we will look at how to paint Iden Versio and the ISF from the Today, The Rebellion Dies squad box.

We first met the ISF in the game Star Wars Battlefront 2.  There, they were dressed in all black.  Thankfully for Shatterpoint the artwork on the Character Cards depicts the ISF with a mix of black and grey uniforms, giving us a bit more to work with.

Personally, my painting style is based around how minis look on the tabletop, rather than close up.  I like to be able to see details of minis from an arm’s length away, and as such I favour strong highlights.  Especially on minis that are painted darker shades.

A quick word on and priming before we start painting: Most of the figures in this box were straight forward to put together, and you have the option to use helmets for all figures if you so desire. The droid on the back of Iden Versio has very thin legs and you will need to take care when you are cutting it out.

I always work with a White Primer as I find it easier to see fine details on a model while I paint, and if I have missed anywhere when painting.  It can also make the colours you paint a bit brighter compared to painting on a black primer.  That being said, you can use any shade of primer you like.

Starting with the flight suit, I used a base coat of Mechanicus Standard Grey, following that up with a shading of Nuln Oil to add some depth to the cloth of the flight suit.  Once dry, I took some Mechanicus Standard Grey and started to highlight the flat and raised areas of the flight suit.  This will help clean up any staining of the Nuln Oil on the flat surfaces and act as a first highlight.  Then I focused on the raised areas of the flight suit, and I started to highlight those areas with a mix of 1:1 Mechanicus Standard Grey and Administratum Grey. I finished this off with a final highlight of pure Administratum Grey by painting on the highest parts of the ridges of the flight suit.

For the black armour, boot, gloves, belts, and helmet, I started with a base coat of Abaddon Black, then shaded it with Nuln Oil.  I started the highlighting process with Dark Reaper, focusing on the raised areas and the edges of all the black areas.  I also added some highlights to the boots and gloves where light would hit the model.  For a final highlight I used some Russ Grey and edge highlighted all the black parts of the model.

Next, I used some Mephistion Red for the red strip down the side of the pants as well as the insignias on their shoulders.  I also chose the highlight the triangle on the front of the helmet as well.  You can choose to add as many red details to the model as you want, and the helmet has a lot of areas that the red highlight will look great on.  I also painted the eyes on the helmet with Mephistion Red as well.  Using Dragon Fire Bright I went though and highlighted the raised areas of the insignias, the raised areas of the strip down the leg, the edge of the triangle on the helmet, and added a dot to the eyes of the helmets as well.

For the blasters I used a mix of 1:1 Basilicanum Grey and Black Templar Contrast Paints.  As these are contrast paints I first paint on a medium amount of paint to cover the blaster, then I wick away the paint as needed from the areas of the model that I wish to be highlighted.  If you did not prime this model in white, you will want to paint the blasters with a white paint first, so the contrast paint really stands out.

I tend to use Citadel paints more than anything else, but you should be able to find equivalent colours in your preferred line.

Del Meeko

For the most part I painted his armour and clothing the same way as the ISF.  As Del has a lot more straps and bags, as well as the large ammo pouch on his arm, there are a lot more black details to go through and highlight.

For his hair I used Dryad Bark as a base coat followed by a Nuln Oil as a shade.  I then highlighted the hair with Dryad Bark and a final few strands had a highlight of Mournfang Brown.  For Del Meeko’s skin I used a base coat of Kislev Flesh followed by a shade of Reikland Fleshshade.  I then highlighted the skin with Kislev Flesh, and a final highlight of Flayed Ones Flesh very sparingly on the nose, brows and cheeks.

Once again, I painted his armour and clothing the same way as the ISF.  Gideon also has some extra straps on him that need to be painted in the same way as the rest of the black armour.

For his hair I used Flash Gitz Yellow as a base coat followed by a Nuln Oil as a shade.  I then highlighted the hair with Flash Gitz Yellow and a final few strands had a highlight of Phalanx Yellow.  For his skin I used a base coat of of Kislev Flesh followed by a shade of Reikland Fleshshade. As above, I then highlighted the skin with Kislev Flesh, and a final highlight of Flayed Ones Flesh very sparingly on the nose, brows and cheeks.

Iden Versio

I painted her armour and clothing the same way as the ISF.  Iden is smaller than a lot of the other models in this squad box, so I found I had to take care to ensure I used a thinner brush to work around the tighter areas of this model.

For her hair I used Dryad Bark as a base coat followed by a Nuln Oil as a shade.  I then highlighted the hair with Dryad Bark and a final few strands had a highlight of Mournfang Brown.  For Iden’s skin I used a base coat of Bestigor Flesh followed by a shade of Reikland Fleshshade.  I then highlighted the skin with a 1:1 mix of Bestigor Flesh and Kesliv Flesh.  For her droid I have painted the top half in the same style as her amour.  For the legs I have used Iron Warriors followed by a shade of Nuln Oil.  Then a final highlight of Leadblecher.  Don’t forget the eye for the droid (like I did).  I used Evil Sunz Scarlet, then a small dot of Fire Dragon Bright. For the lights on her chest piece I have used a range of colours including Moot Green, Evil Sunz Scarlet, Teclis Blue, and Phalanx Yellow. Feel free to do as much as as little here as you like.

Bases

I am using a Hoth Theme for my bases, and I want to keep this theme consistent across all my Shatterpoint squads. The metal floors were done by base coating in Mechanicus Standard Grey., and then drybrushing with Grey Seer, and going back over the cracks between floor panels in Abaddon Black. For the ground I did a base coat of Pylar Glacier, then a heavy drybrush of White Scar.  I then cleaned up the edge where the metal meets the ground with Abaddon Black to create a thin line of separation between the ice and the metal flooring.  Finally, I painted the base edges with Abaddon Black.
