First, a huge thank you to Atomic Mass Games for sending us a review copy of this unit to paint up! The aesthetic of these shield-wielding Stormtroopers really grabbed me when they were announced, and I always like the challenge of painting models white. It’s a really tough color, but I think there are some tricks that can make the process easier.
- After I primed the models black, I gave them an all-over airbrush with Pro Acryl Bright Warm Gray as the foundation for my Stormtrooper armor.
- For my second layer, I airbrushed Vallejo Game Color Glacier Blue to get the armor a little brighter, but not using pure white.
- Now that the armor was pretty much done, I used Pro Acryl Coal Black on all of the weapons, sections in between the armor, the tops of the riot shields, and their eye lenses.
- For metallics on the Stormtroopers, I used a piece of sponge and just stippled Scale75 Thrash Metal along the edges of those areas so it would be a little bit more subtle.
- After I sealed them with Gloss Varnish, I used a black oil wash to really define the lines of all of the models, and then cleaned it up with more odorless spirts.
- For the Marksman, I just painted his shoulder pad with GW Deathclaw Brown.
- For the Security Droids, I painted them all over with Coal Black, stippled with GW Incubi Darkness, and then used Thrash Metal and Scale75 Dwarven Gold on the metallic areas.
- For the Baton-wielding troopers, I painted their electric discharge with Glacier Blue and then Army Painter Neon Yellow.
- Lastly, I used Vallejo Dark Sand weathering powder and GW Blood for the Blood God.
I really wanted to do something cool for the bases, so I chose to try to make the beaches of Scarif from Rogue One. I covered the cork in AK Interactive Concrete and AK Interactive Beach Sand. I used AK Interactive Pacific Blue Gel and Pro Acryl Bold Titanium White to create the ocean water and foam on top of it. I love how these bases turned out, and I think I’m going to use it for other armies in other game systems, too!
