How to Paint Everything: Marvel Crisis Protocol – Sunspot

credit: Brushwizard

Hey everybody, for today’s How to Paint Everything we have one of the new faces of X-Men ’97, Sunspot! This solar powered mutant absorbs the power of the Sun and then unleashes fiery blasts on his enemies.

Sunspot’s model has to be one of my favorite of the line, the flame blast effect is awesome. I love when they get super dynamic with the posing on these Marvel: Crisis Protocol models and this one is one of the best so far.

For Sunspot we’re going to be working on some red and blue tones of his suit and working on some flame effects for his fire blast. His coal black skin and hair is a bit of a challenge, we’ll try to make it easy.

Let’s get to it!

Painting the Yellow Sections

The yellow areas are painted with Yriel Yellow as a basecoat. From there we’ll mix in some Xereus Purple to Yriel Yellow for the shadows and then start highlighting the yellow up with Flash Gitz Yellow, Phalanx Yellow and White.

  • Basecoat: Citadel Yriel Yellow
  • Shadows: Citadel Yriel Yellow: Citadel Xereus Purple
  • Highlight: Citadel Flash Gitz Yellow
  • Highlight: Citadel Phalanx Yellow
  • Highlight: Vallejo Model Color White

Painting the Black Skin

While Sunspot’s powers are active his skin changes to a dark coal black. For this We are going to start with a basecoat of Black mixed with Dark Reaper. Then we’ll pick out some details with a layer of Dark Reaper, followed by a highlight of Dark Reaper mixed with Ulthuan Grey.

  • Basecoat: Vallejo Model Color Black: Citadel Dark Reaper
  • Layer: Citadel Dark Reaper
  • Highlight: Citadel Dark Reaper: Citadel Ulthuan Grey

Painting the Black Flame Hair

Sunspot’s hair is painted with the same colors I used for his skin. Only this time I started with black to try and make the two areas slightly different.

  • Basecoat: Vallejo Model Color Black
  • Highlight: Citadel Dark Reaper
  • Highlight: Citadel Dark Reaper: Citadel Ulthuan Grey

Painting the Red of His Suit

Most of the reds I paint for Marvel: Crisis Protocol start out with Mephiston Red as a basecoat. I then mix in the green Warpstone Glow into it to create the color for shadows and recesses. From there I do a bit of clean-up with Mephiston Red before highlighting it up with Evil Sunz Scarlet and Wild Rider Red.

  • Basecoat: Citadel Mephiston Red
  • Shadows: Citadel Mephiston Red: Citadel Warpstone Glow
  • Clean Up: Citadel Mephiston Red
  • Layer: Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet
  • Highlight: Citadel Wild Rider Red

Painting the Blue of His Suit

The blue sections of his suit were painted with a basecoat of Caledor Sky, followed by a mix of Trollslayer Orange and Caledor Sky for the recesses and shadows. I clean-up the raised areas with Caledor Sky and then highlight it up with Teclis Blue and Lothern Blue.

  • Basecoat: Citadel Caledor Sky
  • Shadow: Citadel Caledor Sky: Citadel Trollslayer Orange
  • Layer: Citadel Teclis Blue
  • Highlight: Citadel Lothern Blue

Painting the Burning Rubble

The burning rubble is painted similarly to how I painted the braziers on the Shrine of En Sabah Nur. We start out with a basecoat of White, I then paint the areas closest to the flame effect with Phalanx Yellow. While its still wet I paint on Fire Dragon Bright and Khorne Red and then try to blend them a bit. Once that’s all dry, I drybrush the rubble with Black.

  • Basecoat: Vallejo Model Color White
  • Layer: Citadel Phalanx Yellow
  • Layer: Citadel Fire Dragon Bright
  • Layer: Citadel Khorne Red
  • Drybrush: Vallejo Model Color Black

Painting the Flames

We’re going to be painting the flames for Sunspot basically the same way I did it for the Dark Future Terrain Pack. It consists of 3 colors over white and its how I paint 90% of the fire fore my Marvel: Crisis Protocol miniatures. From a White Basecoat, add a layer of Phalanx Yellow. While the yellow is still wet, paint on Fire Dragon Bright, starting at the top and letting the two paint mix together as you work. Finally, while the orange paint is still wet, paint Evil Sunz Scarlet from the top down and let it mix with the orange a bit. Touch up as necessary while its all still wet.

  • Basecoat: Citadel Skull White
  • Layer: Citadel Phalanx Yellow
  • Layer: Citadel Fire Dragon Bright
  • Layer: Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet
