How to Paint Everything: Crisis Protocol – Warlock

Hey everybody, for today’s How to Paint Everything: Marvel Crisis Protocol we are going to be working on Warlock. Admittedly, for a character that is nearly as old as I am, I have no recollection of him. The most I know of him is that Warlock is a living machine of the race known as the Technarch and a member of the New Mutants.

Originally, after the release announcement, I didn’t care too much for Warlock’s miniature. But like many things, I actually like how it looks a lot more after I’ve seen it in person. He’s a challenging miniature to paint, in hindsight I think I would have done a few things differently. Here’s how I painted him this time around.

Painting the Glowing Recesses

To get started on Warlock, we will need bright yellow in the recesses of his armor plating. We’ll do this by painting his entire body with AK Interactive’s neon colors. Starting with Fluorescent Yellow and then painting Luminous Orange and Fluorescent Orange in various spots to give the feel of power pulsing through his body. Think of the darker oranges as your shadow colors too.

  • Basecoat: AK Interactive Fluorescent Yellow
  • Layer: AK Interactive Luminous Orange
  • Layer: AK Interactive Fluorescent Orange

Painting the Armor Panels

Now comes the tedious part. You’ll need to have a very sharp paint brush to get all of these tiny areas painted. We want to leave all of the yellow in the recesses showing and brush control is very important. Once you have all of those areas painted black, we can highlight it with drybrushings of Mechanicus Standard Grey, Administratum Grey and Ulthuan Grey.

  • Basecoat: Vallejo Model Color Black
  • Drybrush: Citadel Mechanicus Standard Grey
  • Drybrush: Citadel Adminstratum Grey
  • Drybrush: Citadel Ulthuan Grey

Painting the Red Bricks

While painting Marvel: Crisis Protocol bases, I like to give it a bit of extra color if possible. For Warlock I’ve used the bricks and manhole base. For the red bricks, I start with a basecoat of Doombull Brown. From there I pick out a few bricks to paint Rhinox Hide and Tuskgor Fur, in order to make it more interesting. Then I wash the area with Agrax Earthshade.

  • Basecoat: Citadel Doombull Brown
  • Layer: Citadel Rhinox Hide
  • Layer: Citadel Tuskgor Fur
  • Wash: Citadel Agrax Earthshade

Painting the Rubble

My general go to for concrete colors starts with Stormvermin Fur as a basecoat. I then stipple or drybrush the base with Administratum Grey and Ulthuan Grey. Once that’s all finished, I give it a full coverage wash with Nuln Oil to dirty it up a little bit.

  • Basecoat: Citadel Stormvermin Fur
  • Stipple/Drybrush: Citadel Administratum Grey
  • Stipple/Drybrush: Citadel Ulthuan Grey
  • Wash: Citadel Nuln Oil

Painting the Metal Treadplate

Anything on a base that is going to be rusty steel is painted the same way. I start out with a basecoat of Mechanicus Standard Grey and follow it up with a quick stippling of Mournfang Brown. After that is done, I drybrush the area with Fire Dragon Bright and then give it a wash of Agrax Earthshade.

  • Basecoat: Citadel Mechanicus Standard Grey
  • Stipple: Citadel Mournfang Brown
  • Drybrush: Citadel Fire Dragon Bright
  • Wash: Citadel Agrax Earthshade
