Atomic Mass Games was kind enough to provide Goonhammer a review copy of the Abomination and Wrecking Crew expansion for Marvel: Crisis Protocol. If you’d like to know how I approached painting this particular big green guy, read on.
This particular model has a great deal of cool texture in all the scales, so I planned to utilize a great deal of good old drybrushing on this guy. That would really help highlight that texture without a ton of effort. I’m all about bang for your buck with my limited painting time, and this is a great example.
As always, I primed the model white. If you wanted a darker look closer to the studio paint job, I guess I could begrudgingly admit black primer could work here. Maybe consider combining the two with a zenithal priming as well, although with the darkest scales on portions of the model receiving the most light, I’m not sure if that’s the way to go here. As far as actual painting, here are my steps:
- I basecoated the untextured skin with GW Straken Green. The scales were based with GW Castellan Green.
- Skin and scales both got a wash of GW Athonian Camoshade.
- The scales got an additional wash of GW Nuln Oil in the most recessed crevices. Once that was dry, I heavily drybrushed the scales first with Straken Green, then more lightly with Nurgling Green.
- The skin was then layered up first with pure Straken Green, followed by a roughly 1:1 mix of Straken Green and Nurgling Green. I then did a final highlight layer of pure Nurgling Green.
- Now nearly done with the model, I felt the skin was way too bright. So I went back and did a light and controlled wash of Athonian Camoshade again, being careful to not let it pool or darken things too much. This tied the highlights in much better in my opinion.
- The debris he’s holding was painted like my bases: basecoat of P3 Bastion Grey, heavy drybrush of GW Dawnstone, and light drybrush / stipple with Vallejo Stonewall Grey. The cracks got a light wash of GW Nuln Oil, and deeper cracks got a little black paint.
- Emil’s villainous speedo was basecoated with P3 Cygnar Blue Base. I washed that with GW Drakenhof Nightshade. Once dry, I layered on highlights using a mix of Cygnar Blue Base and Cygnar Blue Highlight. A few raised edges got pure Cygnar Blue Highlight.
- After that, it was just a few details such as the buckle and rebar that I quickly painted with Scale75 Black Metal, then washed with Nuln Oil. Eyes were painted with GW Averland Sunset, and teeth with an offwhite washed with Nuln Oil. The green sign was painted with GW Warpstone Glow followed by a wash of Biel-Tan Green. Lettering was painted with GW Administratum Grey.
- From there I did my usual blacklining and basing, and job done!
