Gunum’s Ascent to Daemonhood in 2023, Part 2: Burn, Trim, Kill!

Hello, dear bloody readers, it’s me, Gunum! I’m back with the second installment of my adventures into the grim world of the World Eaters! Last time we talked, I went into my goal setting for this year and the depth of my intended fall into the World Eaters. I have a couple of recaps already planned, but this one will primarily focus on lobbying and preparation for the local team tournament!

This will mostly be a hobby post, so for those of you looking for a bit more action, you’ll need to wait till my next update for more competitive play.

My list of models that needed paint was pretty long: Weā€™re talking about 30 Khorne Berserkers, 20 Jakhals, 3 Eightbound, 3 Exalted Eightbound, a couple of Rhinos, and a Daemon Prince. My game plan was to create a 2,000-point list that I felt comfortable learning and getting the army mechanics down tight. Here is my work-in-progress list, as well as my list for the upcoming event:

Unlike most World Eaters players, I’ll be avoiding the Lord Avacado and taking advantage of some of the different things provided to us by the World Eaters codex. First and foremost, the new Daemon Prince model looks extra rad and has rules to match. Sitting at almost 20 points cheaper than their primary codex mirror, plus they have strength 8 base and will be strength 10 with a sword. I see this guy as a problem solver and a welcome addition to lead my team.

Of course, I gotta paint him.

That is the fun future I get to look into… before that, I must first crush the most challenging process any chaos player will have to deal with. Trim.

I have to paint 30 of these guys.

I wish I had something fascinating to say at this moment. But you haven’t heard from me in weeks, in what feels like almost a month, because I’ve been painting trim this entire time period. I started with the base of chaos black, and then I began to use different golds to find the kind of trim I would enjoy. I hadn’t decided on a paint scheme right away, so I did paint up a master of executions in what I would see as my future idea. I had been reading about different world eaters groups, and there was a story about one who preferred to fight in space. When I think of space, I think of dark colors, and I think of black. I decided to go with black, with a red accent on their face using Mephiston Red and some color shifts for the dark edges.

The test model turned out pretty rad

I wish I could lie to you and tell you that I was solely focused on completing this job, But because there was just so much to do alongside my school work, it felt like this process would never end. I had to find creative ways to distract myself from the tedious task of never-ending gold. I never truly respected how much trim was on these new corn berserker models, and do not get me wrong when I say that they are lovely sculpts. Games Workshop did a fantastic job on these new models; empowered by their chosen God, they are as tall as Primaris Space Marines.

This made the entire process very fun and engaging in the long run as I saw the models become more and more complete. The skin on the master of Executions is an excellent example, where just little touches on the cloak looked more impressive and leather-like than I had anticipated. The skin on the master of Executions is an excellent example, where just little touches on the cloak looked much more impressive and leather-like than I had anticipated. I made real-looking leather using flesh paint, painted over with the exceptional Guilliman Flesh contrast paint.

Painting trim eventually took a toll on me, and I had to expand my painting adventure and enter: the chaos spawn.

Blood bags: #1, #2, and #3

Those of you getting into World Eaters will find these three stooges invaluable to many of your lists. Simply taking them and camping them on objectives can add up to at least eight victory points for your army. Also, they can screen out your deployment zone because they are so cheap. The humble spawn and its usage in the World Eaters Army cannot be undervalued. What I did decide to do with these models was paint them once with Wych Flesh paint over that with Mephiston red. And then go over their entire body with blood for the blood God, until I felt it was sufficiently muscle worthy. I wanted them to look like skinned beings with bones growing out of their different areas. Only painting about 1/4 of the way up on the spines of #3 was a great example of the mutations that can happen with this kind of monster.

I decided to end this article with my favorite thing to paint but my least favorite unit to buildā€”the exciting new cultists of the World Eaters, Jakhals.

Dramatic WiP shot.

Talk about excellent models on the tabletop and work on them. Between them and Eightbound, I had a hard time deciding which of the line was my favorite type of model. At first, I wasn’t very excited about the lineup, but the dishonored of the Jackals was pretty exciting to work on. At the time of this posting, I have these guys about 100% completed, and I’m excited to show them off along with the battle report in my next article.

Next Time: More Hobby Progress and the Team Tourny.

We’re going into midterms here, so I will try and get out the following article and a battle report during our spring break! I want to thank everyone for your patience as I get these things out; I have been getting great feedback and a lot of angry growling noises as I haven’t been getting these out fast enough.

Game on.
