Competitive Innovations in the Mortal Realms: First One In, Last One Out

This weekend marks another major step toward the end of Third Edition. Skaventide is going up for Preorder and the Indexes won’t be too far behind. There are a few events left trying to get the most out of the edition before it shuts down for good so we got two events in the United States this week.

Rose City Rampage: Get Rex’d GT

38-player, 5-round Grand Tournament in Beaverton, OR, United States on June 22 2024. All the lists for this event can be found in Best Coast Pairings.

Thoughts

This is a tough fight for the Flesh-eater Courts. The monster mash nature of the list means that board coverage is quite a bit more difficult, especially on a mission like Fountains of Frost. Compounding the problem is how many Andtorian Locus the Stormcast have allowing them to lock down the board far better when combined with the better objective control of Questors. Finally, Yndrasta is laser honed to neuter the Zombie Dragons she can get into combat with, while Gardus keeps everyone alive and kicking.

The Flesh Eater courts do put up a solid fight, and the number of wounds and speed the army have access to probably helps a lot, but the Stormcast pull ahead.

Herohammer Stormcast

Thoughts

Ending the addition as one of the top style of Stormcast lists this seemingly hodge-podge collection of heroes can pack a lot of teeth and hold its ground despite the low model count. Gardus functions at the center of the castle, giving a 5+ Ward to everything wholly within 12″. Yndrasta can bring back a soldier each round to every unit, which is extremely important for the low model count list and the Praetors take hits for them.

The Vindictors and Vanquishers can hold their ground while the Incantors buff the party or cast Blizzard on anyone foolish enough to get too close and get stuck in. Pontifex helps take out any Wizards who might harm the army, as range mortal wounds are the biggest challenge to Stormcast.

The Zephyros can hide off in a corner round 1 for an easy Magical Dom before teleporting to the fight to actually help, while the Questors are the vanguard grabbing points.

Horde Sylvaneth co-starring Gotrek

Thoughts

An interesting twist on Sylvaneth. The central pillar here is the Heroes who consist of the Sylvaneth good stuff, particularly Spirit of Durthu who can slam real hard when accompanied by Belthanos for run and charge.

The majority of this list focuses on hordes to tie the enemy down and grab objectives, while the other serious threat Gotrek waits to assist.

The Best of the Rest

There were five more players on 4-1 records. They were:

  • 3rd – Mason Knox – Flesh-eater Courts (Gristlegore): See Showdown.
  • 4th – Chris Hall – Sons of Behemat (King Brodd’s Stomp): King Brodd, Two Gatebreakers and a Warstomper.
  • 5th – Alex Heer – Disciples of Tzeentch (Guild of Summoners): Tzeentch good stuff, plus Krondspine!
  • 6th – Brice Koppin – Fyreslayers (Greyfyrd): Vulkite Berserker Spam
  • 7th – Jeremy Lamoy – Sylvaneth (Heartwood): Belthanos, dual tree characters and lots of Dryads with Kurnoth heavy support.

Summergeddon Super Squad Series

36-player, 5-round Grand Tournament in Tulsa, OK, United States on June 22 2024. All the lists for this event can be found in Best Coast Pairings.

As a note the pairings of this event were unusual. As this was a tournament intended for clubs to play against each other. Club members were not paired into each other until Round 5, which meant that it was not always the same Win-Records playing (In fact, the Showdown was a 4-0 vs a 1-3) but it was still a singles tournament so we’ll cover it anyway.

Thoughts

The lack of a single Bloodthirster in Khorne is a real shocker here. But the points saved on that let them try and fill the list with numbers instead.

The problem here is the Khorne list lacks a really good hammer to go up against things like the Morbheg Knights and Zombie Dragon in the FEC list. The much better recursion means FEC likely win out in bodies (even if they feed the Khorne list as a result).

It goes pretty decisively toward FEC.

Flesh-eater Courts Good Stuff

Thoughts

Rather than skew this basically takes a bit of every good thing out of the book short of Ushoran. This creates a highly adaptable list that’s much more capable of taking down different kinds of opponent’s rather than leaning on a single strategy.

The Gorewarden can deep strike in where necessary and also cast Hoarfrost to buff a unit, while bringing back the dead Royal Zombie Dragon once per game. The infernal Courtier puts a solid 5+ Ward on a unit with Gormayne can debuff key units.

Everything else tends to want to try and charge and tear things up and this gives a ton of options in both numbers and elite troops.

Blissbarbs and Slickblades

Thoughts

An interesting list to be sure. Blissbarb Archer spam has sort of tapered off as the cost kept going up, but 33 is still a solid number. The Blissbarb Seekers can ping a key target for -1 to saves while the Archers follow up to shred through them. Slickblade Seekers can charge in to deal with anything that doesn’t fall to the first volley and Glutos sits in the back handing out buffs or joining the fray if he has to.

Thoughts

A list very similar to the one that won our other event this week, the basic gist is the same. Gardus to protect the army while Yndrasta revives fallen soldiers. Vindictors and Liberators hold the line while Questors grab objectives.

The Best of the Rest

  • 4th – Player Name – Slaves to Darkness (Host of the Everchosen): Bel’akor and S2D good stuff.
  • 5th – Alex Cotter – Gloomspite Gitz (Glogg’s Megamob):Trugg, Skragrot, and lots of Troggs.
  • 6th – Player Name – Soulblight Gravelords (Legion of Night): Legion of Night good stuff.
