Competitive Innovations in the Mortal Realms: Dog Days of Summer

It’s the waning days of summer but 4th edition Age of Sigmar is really kicking into high gear now. We got 2 events this week, both in the US. One is the major Nashcon, with over a hundred players, plus a smaller event in Illinois.

Nashcon Age of Sigmar GT 2024

116-player, 5-round Grand Tournament in Nashville, TN, US on August 17 2024. All the lists for this event can be found in Best Coast Pairings.

Due to the size of the event, we will focus more in-depth on the top 5-0 lists. In addition, Nashcon had a special rule to submit two lists and players choose which one to play at the beginning of each game (as long as they use both at least once). Unfortunately we can’t see which list was used in a given match on BCP so we’ll make some more generalized guesses here.

The Showdown

Mission – Jaws of Gallet

Tobias Kempf – Disciples of Tzeentch

Thoughts

The Nighthaunt have a strong advantage here even without their power level in mind. Jaws of Gallet favors armies that can ping pong around to adapt to objectives as the options narrow. Tzeentch has options for extending itself but has a tendency to focus on castling up to protect the powerful (but delicate) Lord of Change inside.

Nighthaunt can pretty easily soar over a lot of the screen Tzeentch uses for survival and hit key targets while also snatching up objectives so this ends with a Nighthaunt Victory.

Infantry and Cav

Thoughts

Both lists are led by the same heroes, Olynder and Reikenor are both the premium casters of the army. Reikenor is just purely a good caster with his ability to become a Wizard 2 with +1 to cast, and Olynder is a great support piece with her heal ability and debuff warscroll spell. A Lord Executioner can be added to either detachment to soak up the artefact and heroic trait while not adding to drops, and being a solid beat stick at that.

The choice between infantry and cav is pretty equal, though cav is likely to do better against lists with lots of 1 wound infantry to use power through. If it’s against bigger units where the ability to disengage is harder (certainly possible since Nighthaunt can charge out of combat, but dicey) it’s better to take your own 1 wound infantry and cut them down in a fistful of dice.

Hurakan Cav and Foxes

Thoughts

Who needs two lists? Well OK that’s not entirely fair, there is a slight difference here.

The thing uniting these two lists is the emphasis on foxes and cav supporting them. They provide very strong shooting options by being able to run and shoot/charge, while also granting that boon to the Windchargers accompanying them, who also pack decent shooting that ignores Ward saves.

One list brings the new Riverblades which are very mobile units that can move through screens and assassinate heroes, and teleport around the board. Really good against herohammer lists. The second list brings 10 Dawnriders to run down infantry units and Power Through the survivors.

Archetype

Kruleboyz infantry and shooting.

Thoughts

After some pretty dismal results the first few weeks, we finally get a Kruleboyz list on a 5-0!

The first list is built around the Vulcha, as the name implies who is a pretty decent beat stick. Able to do some impact wounds on the charge and gets what is frankly a lot of attacks for a single Monster, with the patented Kruleboyz Crit Mortals. The list includes mostly Monsta-Killaz as theyre the best bang for their buck infantry at the moment, but made sure to include a 20 man Gutrippaz unit to benefit from the minimum 4″ redeploy ability.

The other list eschews the bird to include more shooting, excellent for armies you just do not want to (or can’t) get close to. Even losing the mortals to shooting, they’re not bad and are a lot more mobile than they used to be.

In both lists the Swampcalla Shaman casts the spells while the Breaka-boss wipes makes an excellent beat stick.

Gateway Open Age of Sigmar 2024

39-player, 5-round Grand Tournament in Collinsville, IL, US on August 17 2024. All the lists for this event can be found in Best Coast Pairings.

The Showdown

Thoughts

Unfortunately, we don’t know the mission but I’ll not bury the lede here. We all know how Nighthaunt usually do lately, if it’s a Nighthaunt or Gitz list in the Showdown it’s gonna go to them.

Nighthaunt as it stands have many answers to multiple problems and the game is just an absolute slaughter for Nighthaunt.

Nighthaunt Good Stuff

Thoughts

I don’t want to be cheeky, this is just the best Nighthaunt has to offer. Reikenor is the best caster in the army with his 2 spells and +1 to cast for a frankly small cost of 1 damage. Dreadscythe Harridans and Bladegheist Revenants are the best infantry the army has to offer and the heavy emphasis on Cavalry gives many options to charge foes, Power Through to leave and repeat the process yet again.

The Best of the Rest

There were 6 more players on 4-1 records. They were:

  • 2nd – Alex Cotter – Gloomspite Gitz: Skragrot and Troggs.
  • 3rd – Raymond Lane – Maggotkin of Nurgle: Glottkin, GUO and Slimex with a variety of troop options.
  • 4th – Yancy Aviles-Bofill – Slaves to Darkness: Be’lakor and a daemon prince with S2D good stuff.
  • 5th – Smitty Smith – Idoneth Deepkin: Cavalry based Idoneth.
  • 6th – Aidan Rittgers – Seraphon: See Showdown.
  • 7th – LaRon Roberts – Hedonites of Slaanesh: Keeper of Secrets and Shardspeaker with tons of cav.
