Competitive Innovations in the Mortal Realms: 2024-04-03

After a handful of packed weeks, we’re winding down a bit again with a single medium sized GT. With the announcement of 4th edition on the horizon, things may start to slow down a bit. However, now is the time for players to give it their all and get some of the last big wins in before the new edition, while the game is locked in the state it’s going to remain for the rest of the edition. So this week we’re checking up in Canada for a GT on the west coast.

Wet Coast GT 2024 – Age of Sigmar

50-player, 5-round Grand Tournament in Richmond, BC, Canada on March 29 2024. All the lists for this event can be found in Best Coast Pairings.

Thoughts

Unfortunately we don’t know what missions were played for this, which is a shame because it truly could go either way depending on the mission. While the Stormcast have deep strike capability and the ability to deal a lot of mortal wounds, Seraphon have much better teleport capability and (potentially) higher mortal wound output through spells.

Since this Stormcast list lacks a lot of ways to deal with spells, it’s likely Seraphon have a big edge here, and as long as their deployment remains tight, it will be hard for the deep striking units to actually get where they need to go. Which leads to a strong Seraphon Victory.

Result

Seraphon Victory – 19 – 5

Matt Beasley – Fangs of Sotek – 1st Place

Seraphon good stuff

Thoughts

Pretty typical Seraphon Starborn gameplay. Kroak and a Slann tag team to drop a ton of mortals on you while the Starseer can help if the enemy gets too close by casting Blizzard. The Saurus Guard and Astrolith bearer hold the line while the Raptodons can get aggressive.

This list brings a ton of extra spells which bring mortal wounds to the table, and the Gravetide helps block enemies who might dare get too close to the slann. The Terradon chief is an unusual pick, but by giving it the Arcane tome it’s a cast of Mystic shield without needing to have others waste their spell slots (and it can do a few mortal wounds once per battle, not bad for 90 points).

Khorne Good Stuff

Thoughts

Again, pretty standard list for Khorne. Skarbrand and a Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury juiced up with artefacts and command traits do the heavy lifting while the Ritualist and Slaughterpriest hang back and chant buffs, and the Bloodsecrator gives that far too valuable +1 attack and 4+ rally.

To take advantage of that rally, the list packs a ton of infantry, Bloodreavers function mostly as a tithe marker but can hold objectives as well. Skullcrushers and Skullreapers hit a little harder and can actually do some work on weak to medium infantry.

The Best of the Rest

There were 5 more players on 4-1 records. They were:

  • 3rd – Christopher Hernandez – Ogor Mawtribes (Meatfist): Kragnos with legions of foot ogors.
  • 4th – Arthur Nicholson – Slaves to Darkness (Host of the Everchosen): 6 Theridons alongside the usual suite of Slaves good stuff
  • 5th – Joe Tremain – Stormcast Eternals (Hammers of Sigmar): See showdown.
  • 6th – Adam Wills – Sons of Behemat (King Brodd’s Stomp): Brodd, Gatebreaker, Warstomper and some mini gargants.
  • 7th – David Owen – Ossiarch Bonereapers (Mortis Praetorians): Katakros with a collection of Stalkers, Immortis Guard, Deathriders and Mortek Guard
