It’s a mostly new world! Though a few stragglers are still fighting last year’s war in Leviathan, most of the metagame has moved on to the Pariah Nexus and activated all the exciting rules updates and balance changes that GW have published alongside the new mission pack. Lists have been shaken up, new challengers have appeared, and rumours of some factions/units death’s might have been exaggerated. Also, there’s masses of events again as players unleash all their pent-up excitement.
Today, I’ll be looking at:
- The Glasshammer GT – Birmingham
- Battle for the Capital GT 2024
- 30.Sachsengeballer GT Edition
- Tolaris Cup
- Built Forge Tough GT
- 2nd Annual Dragon Egg WAAAAAGH!!!!!
Tomorrow I’ll be back with:
- Salzburg Major 40K – Alpine Cup
- Dumfries Gamers 40K Charity GT
- Toys of Mass Destruction – Hertfordshire Summer GT
- Field of Flames GT by Tavern of Souls
- Pergőtűz LCOTSV IV Combined Arms PRO
- The Portal Summer GT
On Friday Lowest of Men will take over and cover:
- WarGamesCon 14 Warhammer 40K Championship
- Battle Ready Wargaming’s Southern Showdown
- Rage Grand Tournament
- Bouvr’On Games by Les DĂ©s’Luminatis
- Silicon Valley Grand Tournament
- PKH x BAC Warhammer 40k GT 2024

Thoughts
Our first Showdown on the new missions, and I think it’s fair to say an unexpected pairing of lists on the top table. In the red (corsairs) corner we’ve got Josh Roberts sporting Renegade Raiders, focusing more on the combined arms and shooty elements than was the fashion pre-Dataslate, in particular the power of Rubricae in this detachment.
In the midnight blue corner, we’ve got Drukhari – Realspace Drukhari. None of your new-fangled Skysplinter here! The reason for that is pretty obvious – Darren has gone hard on Talos, and they’re one of the few units in the Drukhari book that does better in Realspace then Skysplinter, benefitting massively from access to Insensible to Pain and Strike and Fade. They’re decent all-rounders with that applied, and their durability combined with the strong and speedy Battleline presence in this build gives this list quite a few different angles to play Secret Missions with, as it can keep foes guessing far more than most.
That, unfortunately, isn’t going to help that much on this mission, as this one is a disaster for Talos compared to a more boat-based build. The Drukhari don’t have anything they can throw out to play for an early Terraform here that doesn’t get utterly butchered by a counter-push by Chosen or Rubricae, whereas the Rhinos with strong supporting Infantry give Chaos plenty of ways to play this. In addition, when the disruptive forces of the Archon and Cypher are hanging around near one-another mid-board, the Chaos army is going to be far more operational than the Drukhari, as their key stratagems are cheap and they have Chaos Lords. Add to all that the fact that all the mid-AP S4 wound-rerolling stuff that Chaos has should be able to chew through Talos when needed, and I think this is extremely uphill for Drukhari unless Chaos wildly overcommits and loses a bunch of stuff to Scourges. Given it’s Josh in charge, that was never really going to happen, and he locked in a fairly commanding victory. I do worry that Terraform might be this packs “skew” mission, similar to Priority Targets and Tide of Conviction in previous iterations – in some matchups, one side ends up just vastly better at playing for it with first turn, potentially to an unstoppable degree.

Thoughts
Never count out brawler CSM builds, it would seem. The exceptional potency of Rubricae in Renegade Raiders gives this variant of the army enough of a toolbox to take on all comers, and shouldn’t be underestimated how sticky a build with this many Marine bodies and access to Armour of Contempt can be. Good to see there’s options for Chaos players despite a somewhat brutal dataslate for them, and great work from Josh as ever.

Thoughts
With Canoptek Court taking a heavy hit in the latest Dataslate, Hypercrypt Legion has blasted its way to the fore as far as the dynasties go, generally versions of it that go extra hard on heft. Lots of lists are going with the Silent King for that, but David’s build here instead opts for lots of C’tan and the Tesseract Vault, the latter being one of the biggest winners from Pariah’s changes to maps, plus being much easier to use thanks to pivot changes. No longer do you have to skip a turn on some missions – you can always set it up, and with Hypercrypt’s mobility you can always get it where it needs to be to do horrendous things, whether that be flensing hordes with its tesla spheres, sniping out Leaders with time’s arrow or just going general nastiness with cosmic fire.
Racking it up alongside four C’tan, which most builds will struggle to lift, plus a massive number of cheap scoring units creates a build that can overwhelm the foe with brute force and also adapt to pretty much anything that’s thrown at it Secondary wise. Vault season, apparently – well done David on undefeated second place.

Heavy World Eaters
Thoughts
Speaking of heavy hitters, that seems to be the mood for the World Eaters as well, eschewing the normal ration of Berzerkers in favour of massive hammer blows from two full Exalted units at their new cheaper price tag. That’ll cause palpitations up close for almost anyone except Custodes, and that’s clearly been flagged as a concern in preparation, as the presence of two Forgefiends ensures that the build can meaningfully interact with elite infantry that can trump them. Both these choices seem especially well suited to the 20-0 scoring that was in use for this event – the Eightbound dealing knockout punches can push through high-margin victories, while closing off the risk of a dead matchup helps ensure that you come away from a loss with some points salvaged. Smart choices on both fronts, well done Daniel.

Mostly covered in the Showdown, a surprise resurgence of Talos definitely wasn’t on my bingo card for the Dataslate, but perhaps the fact that Secret Missions tend somewhat towards rewarding durability is helping push them into viability. Very cool to see them out and about either way, well done to Darren.

Mechanised Bringers of Flame
Thoughts
Sisters make a fiery splash out of the gate, shrugging off the substantial points increases they received in the Dataslate to take our second major of the week. In line with a lot of the early successful (post-Datasalte) Sisters builds, Scott has gone for Bringers of Flame, taking advantage of the very strong all-rounder suite of Stratagems this provides and the great synergy it has with Dominions and Immolators, both of which dodged the baleful eye of balance. By combining those with lots of Castigators and Paragon Warsuits, this build doesn’t really expose any soft targets early on, while having tremendous reach for doing reliable damage in turn, giving it an extremely high chance of coming out of early exchanges on top. If it does, it can be very hard for opponents to push back into the game through the reliability of Miracle Dice and the nasty close-in damage that will ensure once the Paragons (and the turbo-Palatine) hit melee.
Bringers was my favourite detachment in the new book in terms of the playstyle it encourages, and I think it’s fair to say that it probably went up most in the internal balance rankings after the slate, so expect to see plenty of builds like this out there, and congratulations to Scott for setting the pace!

World Eaters with a Karnivore
Thoughts
It’s World Eaters, but with a Karnivore. For doing Karnivore things. I guess it’s maybe intended to project Heroic Intervention threat now that this is cheaper – some of the things that might dare to charge Eightbound really don’t want to get hit by a Karnivore, and just being able to throw a Vehicle base into the side of a unit can really mess up pile-ins, so Intervention threats are definitely a bit more relevant now it’s cheaper.
Mostly this is business as usual for World Eaters outside that, but it is worth noting that there are more regular Eightbound MSUs in play, presumably a mix of them being cheaper and the change to Actions making high early reach on Infantry extra valuable. Great work from Brian in second.

War Horde Combined Arms
Thoughts
The Dataslate wasn’t kind to Bully Boyz or Green Tide, but get this – War Horde is still really good! The relatively all-rounder suite of tools it provides helps builds like this which want to use a bit of everything, and access to ‘Ard As Nails also makes it one of the best places to go in on a Squighog brick. The extent to which a full squad of these is a nightmare to handle has been flying somewhat under the radar while Meganobz have been in fashion, but now that those have been toned down you’ll see more players unleashing the feral hogs (though elsewhere the Meganobz have still seen a bit of play). They line up with Trukk-riding Nobz for some brutal pressure, and also far higher raw killing power than Bully Boyz lists have been working with, so make sure you adjust your Ork-fighting plans accordingly. Top marks to Randy for keeping the Waaaagh going.

Ultra Pressure Vanguard
Thoughts
Ah, welcome to the new thing that you’re going to love to hate – trying to work around the threat of two Mawlocs coming in on turn 1. Either you ignore the threat and get owned, or you play cautiously and find the board overrun with Genestealers. Problematic. Speaking of Genestealers, pushing these up to (functionally) always have S5 as long as you buy them a Broodlord makes a massive difference to how threatening they are, and using them to get a bunch of Synapse in and amongst the enemy before detonating Shadow can make it extremely tough for opponents to get a foothold in the game. After that, the powerful utility Stratagems of Vanguard can lock in scoring for the bugs, and allow them to cruise to a bountiful victory. Vanguard looks like one of the stronger detachments across the game post-Dataslate, and I love seeing the all-in Genestealer play here, so well done Manik!

Crunchy Death Guard – Pariah Edition
Thoughts
Death Guard where everything is a tough target is a tried and true strategy, and here we see it updated for the new world of Pariah Nexus. The key Characters for Plague Marines went up in cost and Grenade shenanigans got toned down, so forget all that noise, it’s scythe time. Both Typhus and the Terminator Librarian can make it really tough for opponents to get out from under the gun if the Terminator units hit melee, especially in combination with the Skullsquirm Blight, and this was clearly enough to allow Vojtech to drag down all the forces arrayed against Nurgle’s chosen – great stuff!

Thoughts
You know the drill by now – one of our squad make it into the Showdown, I just let them cook. Take it away Gunum!
Gunum: That is right, everyone, it is me, Gunum! This past weekend, I was at the first GTA of the Forge game store in Chaska, MN. It is a great spot with a collection of Warhammer models that I appreciated. There are piles of used stuff I can dig through to feed my need for new armies, as well as walls and walls of magic and Star Wars items for purchase. There, I had some great games of Warhammer that ended in a finale that involved a conflict between myself and myself.
Being this was the first event they had ever ran, they had to decide to use player placed terrain instead of the GW layouts. As soon as I knew that, I decided I wanted to play something fun and fast, and I guess that means I am playing Tau. I threw together my own take of Montka, focusing on the units that can provide reroll hits to maximize my lethals, as well as dip into some real aggressive Breacherfish. As I went through the tournament, I made sure that every single one of my terrain maps were shaped like a U on my side, where my opponents tended to build the normal looking maps.
My arrival on the top table versus Alex was no different. As I won the roll off to decide who got what side and who got to place terrain first, I selfishly and maybe a bit arrogantly gave that choice to Alex, allowing him to put a very sharp L blocker in the middle, blocking off a middle objective. We were playing Mission O , which was Terraform – Stalwarts – and Crucible of Battle. My opponent was playing some Dark Angels in a Gladius formation in a way that we have all seen before. The Eradicators with Sustained Hits, Deathwing Knights, and a Land Raider Redeemer. Units that we know are good. His tech I really enjoyed was a squad of Inner Circle Companions paired with Azmodai for a brutal assault doctrine turn. Alex clearly knew how to play as they carried him to meet me at the top table.
The decision to put the L in the middle ended up being a giant deal. He clearly understood that getting shot to pieces was going to be an issue, so he scouted deep in the L and kept his Terminators hidden on the flanks, making it so it was very hard for me to get my hands on him. And by hands, I mean bullets. As the turns progressed, I was in a bit of a joust with his Deathwing Knights waiting in the wings, ready to jump upon me if I stepped out and grabbed objectives too early. I made some early play mistakes like overcommitting Devilfish onto an objective that allowed him to clean up a lot of my troops. By Broadsides and Sky Rays also ineffectually hammered the Redeemer, as 5+ saves were raining from the sky.
Some key points of the game were when he failed a 4″ charge with his inner circle companions, who were then slain by my plasma team. In the very end of the game where I was playing for a draw for a shot at winning the whole thing (as the other undefeated player paired down then lost). If I was able to pull off a draw on the final turn of the game, I would have it. Unfortunately, after some pretty heavy shooting into three squads of Deathwing Terminators as well as two failed 10 inch charges, any hopes I had of winning the event went down the drain and Alex was crowned the victor of this story.
If I was to do this again, I would have taken the initiative. Be more proactive the terrain and made sure he couldn’t box me out from interacting with the middle piece. He was able to keep me away from all of the objectives throughout the game and did a very good job at respecting the firepower my list put out. I had a great time and I would play him again in a heartbeat. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to bring home a Goonhammer win this weekend.

Thoughts
If you really, really hate Deathwing Knights then I hope you enjoyed the last six months, because they are, as the name of this build suggests, back on their bullshit. Both weapon options are now very strong, and that’s particularly true in Gladius Task Force where you can push them to the limit with Assault Doctrine and Honour the Chapter. It also gives you the option to threaten a really broad push into the enemy’s lines that can be overwhelming to deal with. Also very nice with Honour the Chapter are the souped up Inner Circle Companions with Asmodai, who get to ride around in a seven-seater Impulsor and unleash absolute carnage by fishing for Critical Hits when required. Generically great Marine stuff like Eradicators and a Redeemer stack on top of that to create an ultra nasty Unforgiven setup, and it looks like fans of swords and wings (which to be clear, you should be) are in for a good summer. Well done Alex!

Thoughts
Colin, my man, you need to update your list title. It’s over. Let them go.
Anyway, a second event win for the Bringers of Flame here, as the Sororitas put their own unique spin on the concept of hot girl summer. This version is still using a fairly crunchy setup with Castigators and Immolators, but going a bit more slow-and-steady by filling transports with Retributors instead of Dominions. Also a good choice! Elsewhere, Colin is sporting a pair of Penitent Engines to combo with Cleansing Flames, and I think that’s pretty real – Twin-linked and Devastating Wounds always go great together, and they pull double duty as an Overwatch and counter-charge threat. All cool stuff, welldone Colin for surviving the cruel assassination of your poor Repulsors.
