Innes Wilson – Genestealer Cult (Outlander Claw)

Thoughts

Ok, here we go. A meta menace lines up on one side, with all the right units and all the combos you know and fear. Matt’s Sisters list leans harder into the anti-tank than some versions with the Vahl Paragons and slightly less emphasis on Seraphim with only a solitary brick. It wants to scoot forwards, establish a foothold in the game and then overwhelm the foe with fire and melta. With Sisters on an absolute mad one this week, is there anyone to stop them?

Well, they’re not the only ones who can bring the flame. Innes rocks up on an Outlander Claw GSC list that has existed primarily in the mind of Australian visionary Erik until very recently, where it has begun to see play. Have you heard this one before? ‘Cause I have! Tonnes of MSU Acolytes with flamers, lots of boosted OC Vehicles and sticky objectives via Bikers gives this list a lot of mission play, and it packs some cute tricks with uppy downy Ridgerunners and Lone Op retreating sniper Kelemorphs to poke away at the enemy from behind the lines too.

I think the slightly smaller numbers of Seraphim help the GSC here, but cracking the transports and Vahl Suits with the resources they have is no easy feat, and the BoF melta and Miracle Dice one-two is going to go through GSC vehicles like they aren’t even there. What they do have on their side is the constant grind created by the gradual return of their resources, and as Sisters infantry begin to thin out this gives them a boost in the late game. In the event, it looks like this was a nailbiter, with the GSC squeezing out a ten point win and maybe, just maybe, reasserting themselves as a competitive option…

Here we go again with the Trucks and the dying

Thoughts

Alright then Innes, let’s explain your success. *Turns mic on*

“This is ten percent truck, twenty percent kills, fifteen percent concentrated OC on wheels, five percent pressure, fifty percent pain, and a hundred percent reason to play Acos again”

Outlander claw GSC has a few really cool things going for it. It can command space and shove OC on points to a degree few armies can. New changes to cult ambush allowing for returning units to simply deep strike in have radically changed the complexion of the army, which was prone to a collapse if overrun by fast armies that could seek out and remove their blips. Combo this with the fundamentals of this list – tonnes of flamers, hulls for Tank Shock and idiots to lob Grenades, whilst Runners and Kelemorphs plink away from safety, and you have an army more than capable of going toe to toe with a lot of factions.

Outlander loves to strip cover, add an AP, and then go to town with rerolling flamers against targets on objectives, producing a real death by a thousand cuts effect. This gives it solid play into a large number of armies in the game right now, and it’s refusal to trade at all offers a neat solution to the problem of other armies that trade better than you. Once you’ve dropped down an Acolyte squad that JUST died to Overwatch in the same phase, ready to go again, you won’t look back. GSC finding a build that can sing just before a dataslate brings them up – name a more iconic duo. That said, digging out a huge event win with this from nowhere merits some appreciation for one of the great competitive monsters of our time – Leviathan nids this ain’t, and the list went through some very strong players and builds to make it to the gold. what a player Mr Wilson is eh.

Brings of Flame with Vahl

Thoughts

The Sisters BoF build from the showdown. Not much by way of surprises here, but I can confirm having faced visiting ‘wartourist’ Matt round five that he pilots it to perfection. I hope you enjoyed your UK adventure sir, you’ve definitely made a name for yourself! Sisters players will be watching on the September slate with baited breath, but my word they’ve eaten well in the meantime.

Ad Mech Hunter Cohort

Thoughts

Ad Mech lifer Jonny takes a podium place here with a deliciously grindy Hunter Cohort build, capable of throwing out idiots to score and deny all game, whilst keeping you in a headlock via blocking and nasty overwatch control lanes from the Birds and Breachers respectively. Post slate you get some lovely forward combat push via the Ruststalkers and Infiltrators to go and tangle on the front lines, and a lot of armies teching for more elite builds will find themselves hopelessly at sea trying to get their teeth into this. Ad Mech on the rise, you love to see it! Well done Jonny.

Wolf Jail

Thoughts

Wolf Jail architect supreme Matt continues to innovate, cutting back on the cavalry (though not entirely), and working in more by way of MSU infantry for give and go. Bjorn makes it in for their debuff aura of Vect, though I note Matt doesn’t fancy rolling the dice on the Murderfang experience! A sucker punch of Inceptors gives this build a way to reach you if you won’t come and play, and it remains an extremely solid, and potent list that has a lotof ways to hurt you and scores Pariah well. Great work on the top placing Matt!

The Best of the Rest

There were 4 more players on 5-1 records. They were:

  • 5th – Alex Fowler – Thousand Sons:  Tsons goodstuff with cheeky Vortex Beast.
  • 6th – Robert Kimpton – Drukhari (Skysplinter Assault): Skysplinter transport rush with plenty of throwaway wyches and Incubi.
  • 7th – Matthew Langton – Tyranids (Invasion Fleet): Big bug time Invasion Fleet with some tooled up Tyrannofexes, Maleceptors and very pesky Lictors…
  • 8th – Mark Pilkington – Adepta Sororitas (Bringers of Flame): Bringers of Flame Goodstuff

Bringers of Flame Goodstuff

Thoughts

Vik ensures the Sisters gold streak continues almost immediately with a triumph in the Midlands, and a BoF list that jams in plenty of characters for plying nonsense in the early game but eschews Vahl and her Paragons. Celestine is a dream in the initial skirmishes when you have a truckload of melta and you would LOVE the opponent to come and play, and can be used aggressively in the knowledge she is (in theory) getting two goes. The Daemonifuge offers some sneaky deep strike / fights first / lone op combos for anyone trying to push into the Sisters lines, and the overall effect here is a list that will body a lot of armies in the game very happily as long as it nails those opening engagements. Really well done sir!

Nurgles Spikiest Soldiers

Thoughts

Knights veteran Jay hits the podium with an innovative CK list that packs in a Rampager (with Panopoloy of the Cursed Knights for -1 AP to enemy attacks to give him a bit of a durability boost) and compliments the usual mass of smaller Wardogs with some sneaky Nurgley friends. Poxbringers and Nurglings can drop in for scoring, screening, and general utility to compliment the main force and cover areas of the board you might be reluctant to put the more valuable pieces into. As always, a well thought out and innovative Knights take from Jay, really well done sir!

The Best of the Rest

There were 6 more players on 4-1 records. They were:

  • 3rd – Ben Jones – Dark Angels (Gladius Task Force): Triple DWK and the Eradicator brick making hay in Gladius.
  • 4th – Mark Pocock – Chaos Daemons (Daemonic Incursion): All-in Nurgle Daemons with several Great Unclean Ones.
  • 5th – Ed Watts – Black Templars (Righteous Crusaders): Templar Horde with an awful lot of Tactical Marines.
  • 6th – Rees Darvill – Imperial Knights: Massed Armigers with Canis and a Cerastus Knight.
  • 7th – Donny Evason – Necrons (Hypercrypt Legion): Chonky SK / Monolith / Tesseract Vault Hypercrypt, love it.
  • 8th – Matiss Krumins – Space Wolves (Stormlance Task Force): Triple Thunderwolf Storm Lance, YEEHAW.

Lennon Dark Angels

Thoughts

John Lennon style Dark Angels is having a moment after his WTC heroics shed light on the new options available to the faction. Still strongest in Gladius, where the suite of tools help Deathwing Knights become all singing, all dancing murder stars, and the Eradicator brick essentially provides an entire anti-tank arsenal prepped and primed for destruction, the Dark Angels are back and kicking and I am HERE for it. Really well done on the event win sir!

The Best of the Rest

There were 3 more players on 4-1 records. They were:

  • 2nd – Emil Söderholm – World Eaters (Berzerker Warband): Massed Eightbound / Forgefiend World Eaters.
  • 3rd – Jeppa Resmark – Tyranids (Vanguard Onslaught): An absolute carpet of Vanguard bodies with truckloads of Hormagaunts, love to see it.
  • 4th – Mikael Christensson – T’au Empire (Kauyon): Massed Breacher / Ghostkeel Kauyon.

Hive City Gaming GT August 2024

World Eaters Eightbound Rush

Thoughts

World Eaters are slapping folks about in Pariah and I am loving every second. Not one of the factions people were particularly hot on, it turns out they very much enjoy the missions, have some unique options for secret mission nonsense via a resurrecting Angron, and remain a potent melee force in a game that increasingly favours mid board control. All in all, a cracking time to be possessed by eight daemons. Really well done on the event win Sam!!

The Best of the Rest

There were 5 more players on 4-1 records. They were:

  • 2nd – Paul Bridge – Thousand Sons (Cult of Magic): Double Mutalith and a VINDICATOR PAUL YOU LEGEND.
  • 3rd – Harley Scully – Grey Knights (Teleport Strike Force): Lots of Terminators in a chonky GK build.
  • 4th – Toby Bennett – Dark Angels (Gladius Task Force): Lennon style Dangels juiced up with a Hellblaster brick to add extra gun.
  • 5th – Theo Hayat – Thousand Sons: MVB supported Tsons Goodstuff.
  • 6th – Paul James – Space Wolves (Champions of Russ): Awoo! Massed Space Wolves infantry with lots of Wulfen and Bloodclaws. Watch out for Murderfang!!

Wrap Up

That’s it folks, you can all go home now. Pariah rolls on, Sisters are starting to assert a vice grip on the top placings, and it isn’t long now until the LGT where I’m sure we will see a whole host of new approaches as the top UK players jostle for space points. Very exciting times! See you all again soon.
