The LVO may have dominated the US scene, but elsewhere there was plenty more 40K happening. Despite being pretty deep into the edition, people are still finding new ways of using some of the indexes, which is pretty awesome to see, and various spins on the new Necron hotness are also making waves. Let’s take a look as we cover:
- The Dutch Masters Finale
- 40k Brawl – January GT
- Peterborough Slam 5!
- MNM 40k GT 2024
- 2024 Leviathan Season 2 RTT
This week’s second showdown, as voted for by the Goonhammer Patrons, will be:
- Death Guard vs Leagues of Votann at the MNM 40K GT
The Dutch Masters Finale 6 rounds of competitive 40K
60-player, 6-round Grand Tournament in Amersfoort, UT, NL on January 20 2024. All the lists for this event can be found in Best Coast Pairings.

Thoughts
That would be a “no, Canoptek Court is not dead without the Immortal bomb”. Not massively surprising – Wraiths are a nightmare to handle and great all-rounders with the buffs the Court brings, and the Nightbringer and Doomstalkers do a lot of work to ensure you can still hand out damage when required. This build looks set to be a metagame staple, so make sure you have a good plan for handling it – in particular, Technomancers are very squishy themselves, and can’t get back up in this Detachment, so anything that gives you access to Precision goes up in value a lot while the Court is in session. Congratulations to Pieter for claiming victory for the Dynasties.

Thoughts
Despite a shaky set of army rules, the sheer power of the Karnivore and Brigand datasheets, particularly in an army that can fill out some capabilities with Daemons, continues to let Chaos Knights perform reasonably well. The sheer pressure they can exert lets them bowl over lots of opponents, potentially taking down games that on paper you’d expect them to be disfavoured in, and plenty of good armies just aren’t bringing enough anti-tank to stop this. I think the choice to go hard on Karnivores is well tuned to the metagame as well – 6A from the slaughterclaw makes them one of the best units in the faction for carving through squads of Wraiths, and I think there’s a legitimate chance that Canoptek Court lists just fold to this, as their normal speed bumps just don’t work. Dick got commanding wins against the two Necron lists he faced (one Hypercrypt, one Court) so I think there’s a legitimate chance War Dogs may be the counter pick for a Necron heavy meta. So much robot carnage on the horizon. Congratulations Dick.

Thoughts
The classics always come back around, and the cost-efficient shooty bugs of Tyranids remain a pretty strong foundation for a list, especially with access to the mix of target adaptability and the Feel No Pain Stratagem that Invasion Fleet gives them. Deathleaper is also a good example of a unit that’s perfect for compromising a Technomancer to a permanent end, opening up the Wraiths to some classic bug ultraviolence, and I think this is another build that a Necron-heavy metagame incentivises. Tyranids problem since their book has been that their hardcore anti-tank stuff is sparse and overcosted, but Necrons tend to have lower T values and rely on invulns, so Exocrines become more attractive. When one of your most cost-efficient units is favoured by the metagame that tends to work out pretty well for you, and Ron’s success here shows that (and although defeated against Pieter’s Necrons in the final, he put up a very strong fight).

As the list name suggests, this build’s innovative trick is using 2×5 foot Death Company + Chaplain in a Rhino to play the role of Chosen with Chaos Lords in CSM and…yeah OK, that does seem kind of awesome, and should flatten other elite Infantry and tanks alike, and are extremely inexpensive for what they add to the list. Running as GTF in concert with the jump pack unit also means you can have a brutal go turn if required via Assault Doctrine. The rest of this is standard Marine hits, but this really does look like Coen finding a bit of tech that everyone else has missed (presumably excluding some Facebook faction groups who will now get mad at me), and it really paid off, so congratulations!

Skirmishy Guard
Thoughts
Martyn’s Guard builds have shown up in here quite a few times at this point, but he’s got something new going on here. The plan appears to be to use lots of Catachans and some Bullgryn MSU to flood the board, bogging down the enemy enough to allow the artillery and Dorn to pound the opponent into dust. The Kasrkin also provide a bit of pinpoint killing power, while the Tank Commander is ready to sell their life dearly on a flank at some point, with the shoot on death almost guaranteeing a trade up for their sacrifice. This is all about as on-point and flavourful as a Guard plan is going to get, and clearly got the job done, so well done Martyn!

- 3rd – Matthew Edginton – Astra Militarum (Combined Regiment): Another unique guard build here, using a tonne of mechanised Scions and Rapier Batteries to pressure and zap the foes.
- 4th – James Read – Necrons (Hypercrypt Legion): A different spin on Hypercrypt, here using a couple of big Lokhust Destroyer units to obliterate the foe, backed by a Monolith with small Infantry units for objective/harrassment play (including Trazyn, who can lock in the home objective) and then rounding out with Imotekh and a big Lychguard block, presumably set to go for the big Dimensional Corridor play if the Monolith survives on the board.
- 5th – James Ball – Chaos Daemons: Unusual board control Daemons, Using lots of Horrors and one unit each of the other Troop types with some Epic Hero leaders to provide lots of powerful toolbox plays, then packing Be’lakor and Big Bird as protection/big ranged hitters.

All-rounder Sisters with lots of Arco-Flagellants
Thoughts
The (at this point) battle-tested plan of using loads of Arco-Flagellants to screen Triumph and Dialogus powered tanks and Sisters takes another trophy. The standout features here are the relative lack of Transports, presumably calculating that if Arco-flagellants are expendable, why invest extra in them, plus the Saintly Palatine who’s presumably going out with five Sisters in an Immolator to die gloriously, providing miracle dice to power a big go turn. All looks very potent, and clearly used to great effect by Jack – congratulations!

Thoughts
Two very grindy armies here, both with a healthy mix of durability, shooting and the ability to stage melee threats. Unfortunately I don’t have the mission for this one (my 40K spy network does not extend into Finland), which makes this tricky because I think the armies are very evenly matched, albeit not entirely identical in how they play. The Votann have the edge in pure shooting, and should probably win out if the armies stay at bay from one another, but the Death Guard’s big Plague Marine units with the Blightspawn trump any of what they’re up against up close, and the Rhinos give them plenty of ability to stage safely. With Votann operating on base BS4+ and being relatively limited on re-rolls, Skullsquirm Blight is also a huge problem for them if they get boxed in by the Death Guard, something they’re even more at risk of thanks to having a big unit in reserves.
I think the key goal for the Votann thus becomes spreading out rapidly, making as much use as possible of Sagitaur Scout moves to avoid getting bunched up, and using the Land Fortress as a central anchor to bait in some of the Death Guard’s good stuff. Not much of what the Guard has can kill it quickly, and if they can be pulled in lots of different directions then the attrition over time from the Votann might tip the balance. That does create some risks of falling behind on Primary, but I think it’s better than the risk of getting decisively rolled over if the Plague Guard put the boot in. From the scoreline, I’d say the Votann must have done a good job avoiding that – the Death Guard did win, but it was a very close run thing.

Thoughts
Another showing for the extra crunchy Death Guard special, presenting no soft targets and plenty of killing power. As alluded to in the Showdown, I’m a fan of including the big Plague Marine units, as one of those with a Blightspawn can be an incredible nuisance against some foes, particularly those with BS/WS4+ or who are relying on melee to clear out pressure pieces. Death Guard are having a great run right now, so if you’ve had them on the shelf for a while you should follow Lasse’s example, get out there and win some games.
The Best of the Rest
There were 5 more players on X-1 records. They were:

- 3rd – Perttu Hiisivuori – Space Wolves (Ironstorm Spearhead): Pure armour spam, lots of Redemptors, Ballistus and Whirlwinds.
- 4th – Niklas Ojalainen – Orks (Waaagh! Tribe): Green tide-ish, lots of Infantry with buff Characters (including Ghaz) and one loaded Battlewagon.
- 5th – Juha Ottelin – Leagues of Votann: See showdown.

All-rounder Sisters with lots of Arco-Flagellants
Thoughts
Slightly different tanks, same great taste – this is another build that combines the adaptability of Triumph-powered Sisters with the nasty speed bump of Arco-flagellants to get the Emperor’s work done. Congratulations to Riley.
The Best of the Rest
There were 4 more players on 4-1 records. They were:
- 2nd – Anthony Richardson – Drukhari (Realspace Raiders): Fairly shooty Drukhari, using lots of Scourges and Ravagers, with Beastmasters as a tarpit and a few deadly Epic Heroes as solo beaters.
- 3rd – Frasier Parry – World Eaters (Berzerker Warband): The one true 1975pts World Eaters army.
- 4th – Nathan Sgrazzutti – Chaos Space Marines (Slaves to Darkness): Extra infantry-heavy CSM, adding Legionaries and some Noise Marines to the standard Chosen/Accursed recipe.
- 5th – Alexander Buchan – Black Templars (Righteous Crusaders): Aggro Infantry with lots of Primaris Crusaders and Sword Brethren.
Wrap Up
That’s it for this week – onwards to the new ITC season, starting this weekend. Will the dynastic dominance continue, or will some plucky underdogs/perfidious Aeldari put them back in their box? The former if I have anything to say about it at my event, but I guess we’ll see.
