[40k] Competitive Innovations in 10th: Beach Episode pt.1

Welcome to Competitive Innovations, our weekly feature for a number of game lines across the tabletop wargame space. Each week our army list and tactics experts canvass the top tournaments for their game of specialty, looking at the week’s top match-ups and how they played out on the tabletop to let you know what’s hot, what’s not, and what might be coming next as the competitive meta evolves year-round.

Warhammer continues apace, this week bringing us the massive Beachhead Brawl UK supermajor and some hefty events across the pond as well. Daemons, Space Marines, Bridgehead and Necrons seem to be making the running right now, albeit with considerable variety within those factions, especially Necrons who have five different Detachments represented in the 5-1 finishes of Beachhead alone. Plenty of other factions are picking up big finishes as well, but as we stand on the precipice of Aeldari and Astra Militarum being unleashed it’s clear there are some armies that need help, with Adepta Sororitas and T’au in particular falling by the wayside.

All that could change in the next few weeks, of course, whether because of new top builds shaping the game around them, or counters turning up to depose the top dogs. The first new Aeldari lists will probably roll in as early as next week, and I look forward to seeing how right/wrong we were about the book.

Anyway, that’s next week – this week we’ve got the following today:

  • Beachhead Brawl 2025
  • Warzone: Atlanta Warhammer 40K Golden Ticket Tournament 2025
  • Wettcon Vinter 2025
  • Frost Hammer
  • WINTER ASSAULT INDONESIA’s 1st GRAND TOURNAMENT

On Friday Lowest of Men will cover:

  • Grand Tournoi 40K – Grand Clash 2025
  • Wizards GT 2025
  • NSW Masters – NSWTC
  • Da Bolton GT

Beachhead Brawl 2025

199-player, 6-round Grand Tournament in England, GB on February 07 2025. All the lists for this event can be found in Best Coast Pairings.

Thoughts

The Baal classic here, with Nicholas (fresh off his GT win two weeks back) bringing his (I can’t believe it’s not) Blood Angels build out against some a nicely balanced Tyranid build. I really like the use of the Tervigon with Adaptive Biology here, as it means the threshold for what you need to do to permanently neutralise the bug or its brood is pretty high, either clearing out a 2+ Save 5+/4+ Feel No Pain monster, or sweeping a whole squad of Termagants, potentially through the 5+ Feel No Pain Stratagem. Many armies will bounce off that, and it creates a really strong central presence for the rest of the list to operate around. It also lets you do some powerful janky objective flipping with respawns once you add access to Endless Swarm as well.

That latter point feels like a strong asset here, providing a way to context the table against a hyper lethal Blood Angels build, and setting up some things that it could potentially swing and miss against. I played against Nicholas in round four, and experienced first hand just how hard this build can hit, but big Feel No Pains are what you want to shake up the maths, and the Tyranids can deploy those in several places at once thanks to the Tervigon. There’s enough stuff here that’s slightly over the line that the Blood Angels can clear with a single unit reliably, and enough consequences if they fail, that I think there’s a real game here, especially on a Sweeping Engagement deployment, which I think helps the bugs more than more corner-skewed maps would – the event was using UKTC-style terrain, which makes flank shooting from the Predators out of Reserves especially strong.

I think the flipside, and perhaps the issue for the Tyranids, is that they just don’t have a great answer to the Ballistus dreads – they outrange the Zoanthropes by miles, and those are extremely vulnerable to a counterattack from Destructors once they commit. The flip side of the limited flank angles here is that the round 6 map has some strong firing lines to objectives (and a wide open centre objective) from some parts of the deployment zones, and the Ballistus can cover these with relatively low risk of getting punished. The way around that is to make use of some mid-board ruins on the two side objectives to try and hide from the fury, but that’s complicated by the Blood Angels also having more tools for going into a ruin and clearing it (though the Genestealers are at least something for the Nids).

I think the best shot for the Tyranids is to play a very cagey Primary denial game with Termagants – while the Fight First units the Blood Angels can put into ruins are hard to charge, the Tyranids have more expendable options for just flipping and denying a point without engaging, and the Blood Angels have to be a little careful with how they use their Assault Intercessor squads, as if they lose both before the Termagants are gone, a two-pronged push from the bugs might build up some Primary momentum.

I think both sides have a decent shot here, and the Tyranid build is a really strong one for UKTC-style boards, but the Blood Angels do, ultimately, have the advantage in ways to just reliably make something happen if they pick the targets right. The result was pretty tight here, but the forces of not-Baal took the win and the trophy in the end.

Thoughts

Between a prior event win and a showdown there’s not much left to cover here, save to say that from direct personal experience that the killing power of this build is something to behold. Liberating yourself from the Blood Angels keyword seems to be a strong play, and Nicholas’ build works super well on UK-style terrain, so congratulations to him on the win!

Balanced Bridgehead

Thoughts

In second place we have Astra Militarum legend Martyn using his spin on Bridgehead. This looks a lot more like a “traditional” Astra Militarum build than the full Scion spam ones, relying on the core quality of the Tank Commander and Russ datasheets to pressure and blast the foe, then unleashing Scion power when something needs to be properly obliterated (and then reloading via Strat if needed). He’s also gone hard on Mortar squads, who are particularly good given the prevalence of Daemons at the moment, as they help chip away at their scoring pieces.

I vastly prefer this to the all-Scion variants, especially on tables where screening the foe out is pretty practical, and given Martyn’s guard mastery, it’s no surprise to see him take it to the top. Obviously the guard book arrives in full very soon, with a few rules changes that could shake things up, but I expect something like this to be showing up in the column (probably piloted by Martyn again) very soon!

Heavy Hitter Incursion

Thoughts

Hey speaking of Daemons (and people who are masters of their faction), the final undefeated slot was taken by Byron, who has stuck to Daemonic Incursion rather than pivoting to Legion of Excess. That brings both the benefit of practice and of extremely reliable delivery of Shalaxi and Skarbrand as alpha threats, while Be’lakor and the Gift Great Unclean One create a formidible anchor that foes will have to close in on to engage. Adding enough cheap, speedy scoring units ensures that said foes will probably be forced to come out to play at some point, and when they do this army will hit them at near maximum power, creating unstoppable momentum given how tough some of the monsters are. Huge congratulations to Byron!

Canoptek Court

Thoughts

Oh hey it’s me. Love it when I get to put myself in the newspaper.

Anyway – two weeks ago I tried Canoptek Court at the Winchester GT, and really liked it – I’ve always found the army fits my playstyle, and it feels like a decent chunk of armies out there at the moment can’t easily deal with a two-pronged Wraith attack, especially on UKTC maps. I did make some changes however, mostly off the back of getting obliterated by Nurgle Daemonic Incursion, where not having quite enough screening presence, and not having a Royal Warden for Fall Back/Shoot on the Immortals really bit me. I also decided that in a Daemon-heavy metagame, there’s really no substitute for the Nightbringer, and found the five points to bump the Void Dragon up.

Good news – all of these changes worked very well, and the above list worked very effectively. Being able to start a Wraith unit forward and usually either concealed or in a position to Reactive Subroutines or Countertemporal Shift for safety creates enormous Primary pressure, letting you dictate the pace of engagement and maximise the value of your threats. As ever with Necrons, not everything performed all the time, but the sheer scoring advantage this version had let me recover from dodgy turns in several games. The exception was against Nicholas’s Blood Angels as I mentioned above, but even there I think I could have given myself a much better chance if I’d made the right move early on – I had the option to sacrifice uppy-downy Ophydians to blank his Strategic Reserves shooting options for a turn, but decided my Wraiths could take it – on that one occasion, they could not, and the game unravelled from there. That’s an important learning point – against anything with super oaths, you need to take it slow early and only engage fully around turn 3, as if they get four full turns of value against you, they can push through the list’s defences.

Otherwise, however, things went swimmingly – perhaps helped slightly by the fact that my final match was against…Stephen’s Nurgle Daemonic Incursion, a rematch from two weeks ago, with me having retooled my list specifically based on how our last game went down. That allowed me to flip the crushing defeat he dealt me last time into a narrow victory for 5-1, and hopefully we’ll get a best out of three finale at some point.

I had a really good time playing this, and can highly recommend giving it a go if you’ve not tried Canoptek for a while. I also think the double Wraith army template would potentially work well as Awakened or Starshatter, but I love the nonsense you can do with Reactive Subroutines so much I think I’d suffer without it. My only struggle with this is that I’d love something just a bit more reliable at popping a tank than the Doomstalkers – but at least they’re cheap and easy to maneouvre. I had such a good time with this that there’s a tiny, treasonous part of me that wants to give it one more go before the inevitable Aeldari pivot, but it’ll still be waiting for me when the third round of nerfs finally puts the elves in the ground for the edition.

The Best of the Rest

Bobby G Plane Club

Thoughts

John continues to deploy his latest diabolical Ultramarine build to great success, using the might of Ride Hard, Ride Fast on a Stormraven to create a shooting threat at a durability level that many forces can’t really handle, and creating options to crack open matches against other Oath-boosted Marines by choosing to go plane mode, where it opens up the ability to create a resource advantage by swooping on and dunking something. You also get always-on bonus reach for Bobby G and Calgar when they decide to come out swinging, discouraging foes from getting too close, as does the threat of having a Brutalis Dreadnought dropped on your head, which I hear is painful. Two Ballistus and plenty of utility units round out the build, giving it plenty of ways to engage however it’s using the plane. Congratulations to John for proving that there are always more ways to hurt people with Ultramarines.

All-rounder Bridgehead

Thoughts

Another top showing for a Tank Commander-packing Bridgehead variant, supported by a decent crop of Scions, some Indirect, and some Kasrkin (optionally in a Taurox if the Catachans don’t need it) as extra on-board threat projection. That continues to be a strong plan – the fundamental effectiveness of being able to pressure the board on the cheap with Catachans while Tank Commanders wait to strike is strong in any Detachment, and the sheer violence Bridgehead can do is a great combination with this. Will it survive Tank Commanders catching a nerf to the Demolisher Cannon? I’d bet probably yes, and I’m sure we’ll see soon enough. Well done David.

Flyblown Poxwalkers and Terminators

Thoughts

If there was an award for leaning in on a detachment’s theme as hard as possible then Tommy would definitely win it this week, which I assume would go nicely with the bronze medal he also won. Flyblown wants you to shamble Poxwalkers and Terminators at the foe with Blight Haulers to protect them, and that’s exactly what you see here – a wall of (tough) bodies that will hit melee on turn two at the latest (especially with Nurglings to keep some Scout channels free), and be a real nightmare to shift from there.

While Blightlords normally pale in comparison to Deathshrouds, here where durable Infantry is such a key part of the plan it’s important to have access to an extra tough unit if that’s what a situation calls for, and having access to a source of -1 to Wound that they can use does a massive amount to close the gap in utility. I do also like how the threat of a full re-rolling Sorceror alpha strike forces the opponent to be quite careful in positioning when trying to handle the extreme pressure, creating a lot of opportunities for a terminal mistake. Tommy’s only loss was to David’s Scions above, which makes sense because it does feel like they’re above a threshold of damage output that they can just carve through this. Otherwise, all foes fell to Nurgle, great stuff and a very strong use of one of the more esoteric Grotmas detachments.

Heavy psycannon goes brrr. Especially, in defiance of all natural laws, when you have a circle of infantry providing a buff aura to hype characters up. Weird stuff. Very effective though. Great work from Collin.

Pressure Fleet

Thoughts

Another cool spin on Invasion Fleet next, tinkering with the standard Monster Mash mix to exert higher pressure on the foe. Genestealers (particularly now Broodlords turn on the 5+ Feel No Pain from Rapid Regeneration) and an acid spray Tyrannofex buy time for the Norn to get into position, after which any foe is going to find reclaiming the board extremely challenging. That closes off one of the failure case for monster mash builds, which is getting blocked out of seizing objectives early then denied with chaff late, and helps create a very reliable route to victory. I think this is a really strong design, great stuff from Dag.

The Best of the Rest

There were 5 more players on 4-1+ records. They were:

  • 2nd (4.5-0.5) – Pontus Koch – Ultramarines (Gladius Task Force):  A fairly go-wide herohammer Ultramarines build, eschewing Bobby to add more stuff. Calgar, Ventris and Sicarius (all with heroes) take centre stage instead, backed by Ballistus Dreads and a tonne of Inceptors.
  • 3rd – Erik Larsson – World Eaters (Berzerker Warband): A rare Angron-less Berzerker build that uses lots of Khorne Berzerkers and Eightbound MSUs.
  • 4th – Pierre Dahlgren – Adeptus Custodes (Solar Spearhead): Hull-tastic Spearhead using triple Caladius, triple Vendread, two Galatus (including an extremely upsetting one with the Adamantine Talisman) and, of course, the Feel No Pin Telemon.
  • 5th – Stefan Love – Orks (Taktikal Brigade): Mechanised shooty/Breaka Boy Taktikal.
  • 6th – Fredrik Lövinger – Necrons (Awakened Dynasty): Herohammer Awakened with all the big hits ready to engage the foe, get knocked down, and get back up again.

Toolbox Inheritors

Thoughts

Despite the strength of Liberator Assault Group, the wide range of tricks you can pull of in Inheritors continues to provide a real alternative, especially if you like Infantry shooting to go with your melee threats. Here the notable play is that there’s a lot of shooting power that can operate with semi-impunity – the Eliminators get Lone Operative and a free Fire and Fade-like, while the Eradicators can slam In the Shadow of Great Wings every turn, while also being immune to Overwatch. As ever, a difficult-to-answer shooting setup is a premium way to force foes to engage with you, at which point you can unleash the wrath of various melee Characters and the big Assault Marine squad. If the opponent won’t come out to play, there’s plenty of scoring potential from the Phobos stuff and access to Unto the Burning Skies as well. A very nice combination of toys here, well done Stepan.

The Best of the Rest

There were 6 more players on 4-1 records. They were:

  • 2nd – Sergey Yalunin – Necrons (Canoptek Court): Ultra-durable Court with two Wraith units and two full Warrior squads with Szeras.
  • 3rd – Michael Miheyev – Tyranids (Vanguard Onslaught): Two Genestealer squads with big bugs and a zappy Neurotyrant/Zoanthrope unit following.
  • 4th – Alexey Gurin – Chaos Space Marines (Fellhammer Siege-host): Fellhammer lead by Abaddon, using a bit of everything and a full Rubricae unit as a centrepiece.
  • 5th – Roman Khalitov – Astra Militarum (Bridgehead Strike): Full Scion send with the added punch of the powerful new Catachan and Krieg Heavy Weapon team datasheets, the flamers from the latter being especially nasty out of Strategic Reserves here.
  • 6th – Ivan Bogdanov – Orks (Taktikal Brigade): An all-rounder variant of Taktikal Brigade mixing some of the shooty stuff like the Flash Gitz squad with full Kommando units and some Meganobz in a Battlewakon.
  • 7th – Ivan Nazmiyev – Chaos Daemons (Plague Legion): Pretty much every Nurgle Character you can think of, some big hitters like Rotigus, a GuO and a Soul Grinder, and then enough other units to gum up the table and frighten the foe to death.

All-rounder Awakened

Thoughts

More Necrons to finish up for the day, specifically an Awakened Dynasty build with a bit of everything. Want to wedge a durable brick somewhere? the Warriors with Szeras or the Wraiths have got you. Something need blasting? Doomsdays. An objective needs to be ominously loomed over? C’tan. Necrons are just in a fun place right now, what can I say, and have a solid mix of different challenges they can force a foe to answer or perish. Great stuff from Vincent.

The Best of the Rest

There were 5 more players on 4-1 records. They were:

  • 2nd – Austin C – Chaos Daemons (Daemonic Incursion): A blast from the not-that-distant past with the Keeper/GuO/Big Bird trio at the core, two Soul Grinders for extra heavy lifting, and loads of small speedy units to score and pester.
  • 3rd – Rafael Satya – World Eaters (Berzerker Warband): The one true World Eaters list.
  • 4th – Mario Hadiwana – Ultramarines (Vanguard Spearhead): Bobby G gun club as Vanguard to spoil the fun of mid-AP shooting lists.
  • 5th – Moses Manalu – T’au Empire (Retaliation Cadre): Crisis toolbox with some Riptides and Sky Rays on top.
  • 6th – Daniel Beniah – Necrons (Awakened Dynasty): All-rounder Dynasty centred on a full unit each of Warriorsa and Wraiths, backed by shooty toys and various utility MSUs.
