After spending around $165 picking up all of the new releases for the Black Library Celebration (recap here), I’ll admit I was grateful for another week’s respite for my wallet. Last year we only had a week off before Lazarus: Emnity’s Edge, Cypher: Lord of the Fallen, and The End Times: Doom of the Old World collection were unleashed, so enjoy the mercy while we have it.
It’s not like we don’t have titles ready to drop. Sharp-eyed minds will note that two of the three aforementioned titles above were Dark Angels books, releasing the same week as their Codex, the Dark Angels Combat Patrol, and a number of notable Chapter minis. With the Champions of Slaanesh Army Set now out, we should expect Jude Reid’s Fulgrim: The Perfect Son to be not far behind. And just in case we forgot, Games Workshop made sure to remind us this week with an article about Emperor’s Children reads.
We also know about Grotsnik: Da Mad Dok, the next release from Above and Beyond author Denny Flowers. Last seen in Irreplaceable (as part of the Black Library 2024 Advent Subscription) and then teased again this past Christmas, like the recent Leontus: Lord Solar (reviewed here) you can expect a delay of a few months between the initially-offered Limited Edition and the regular hardcover one.
Planning Ahead
For those who really enjoy peering into the crystal ball to see what lies ahead, there’s another tool we can use to divine the future: Amazon pre-orders. Sure you have to wade through a million listings (not to mention the endless sea of AI fakeries), but if panning for gold was easy everyone would be rich. Or something. Anyway, here are some upcoming paperback release dates they’ve got listed, but as always take them with a grain of salt.
- Ahriman: Undying, by John French (06 May)
- Legends of the Wolf: The Omnibus, by Chris Wraight(26 May)
- Broken Crusade, by Steven B. Fischer (01 July)
- Dominion Genesis, by Jonathan D. Beer (01 July)
- Morvenn Vahl: Spear of Faith, by Jude Reid (01 July)
- Grey Knights: The Omnibus, by Ben Counter (01 July)
- Luther: First of the Fallen, by Gav Thorpe (01 July)
- Oaths of Damnation, by Robbie MacNiven (15 July)
- Above and Beyond, by Denny Flowers (15 July)
- Ravenor: The Omnibus, by Dan Abnett (15 July)
- Dawn of Fire: The Silent King, by Guy Haley (21 July, this had been previously listed two months ago as 22 April)
- The High Kâhl’s Oath, by Gav Thorpe (26 August)
- Ciaphas Cain: The Anthology, by Sandy Mitchell (23 September)
There was also this little bit of mystery, what appears to be a placeholder for an upcoming title:
The listed author, R. W. Wilt, offers few clues. They’ve contributed four short stories to the Black Library, two of which appeared in eShort subscriptions in 2024 (Eradicant in last year’s Black Library Celebration Subscription, and The Guns of Enth for Space Marine Successors Week the following month). Surely not enough to fill a volume, so this may be another anthology on the horizon.
Of course, while Amazon is a handy tool for seeing what’s available, I would always encourage the thoughtful reader to acquire their library through their friendly, local gaming store or independent bookseller.
And speaking of those AI fakeries, by the way, Timothy Linward of Wargamer did a nice dive on them recently, well worth a read for the morbidly curious.
New & Notable
In case you missed it, we reviewed the Black Library Celebration eShort Subscription this week. There’s still time to buy the bundle, or go a la carte for full price. If nothing else, don’t sleep on Sam Ryan’s Finest Hour, an incredible tale of Astra Militarum heroism and a regimental banner.
Gareth Hanrahan has penned four short stories for the Black Library, three of which were for the underrated Warhammer Crime imprint. He’s part of the team behind a new horror TTRPG crowdfunding campaign, Fear Itself- the Shattered Veil Edition, currently close to its pledge target. If you’re a fan of horror it would be criminal not to take a look, and if horror’s not your thing he’s also rolling up the sleeves for the new Terraforming Mars TTRPG!
Speaking of horror, Maria Haskins authored The Jagged Edge, which saw inclusion in the Only War: Stories from the 41st Millennium anthology. With March being Women in Horror Month, she’s offered up a list of eight recommendations to keep you hiding under the blanket.
Finally, one of the things I’ve truly enjoyed learning about Black Library authors is how very many of them aren’t just writing for a paycheck, but genuinely love and are involved with Warhammer as a hobby. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got no problem with mercenary wordsmithing- all art is work, too, and few are those without bills to pay- but seeing that their passion goes well beyond the page is itself a delight.
Here’s some work Adrian Tchaikovsky- whose superb short story The Long and Hungry Road is included in the new Blood of the Imperium anthology- shared on BlueSky.
That’s all for this week, I hope you enjoy the break!
